Sky Atlantic's flagship drama series follows gangster life in New York during the Prohibition Era. Legendary director Martin Scorsese got the show off to a dazzling start by directing the pilot. We all love a bit of period drama. Throw in some guns and violence and you're onto a winner.

The Killing
Best TV of 2011
The Swedish crime drama has silently accumulated a cult following on both sides of the Atlantic. With a strong female lead who doesn't use her sexuality as a source of power, the series was something fresh for 2011. Surprisingly, the US even managed to pull off a decent remake.

The Antiques Roadshow never got this much hype. But something about Channel 4's antiques dealing show captured the attention of telly viewers. Maybe it was the fact that it had its own Simon Cowell-esque villain in the shape of Jeffrey Salmon. Or maybe it was just Jeffrey Salmon's scarves.

The BAFTA-nominated drama followed a British girl retracing her grandfather's footsteps in Israel and Palestine. The series was both compelling and thought-provoking and was just one of the many impressive dramas brought to us by Channel 4 this year (Top Boy narrowly misses out on our Top TV list).

An Idiot Abroad 2

The first series of Sky One's alternative travel series rated highly among TVGuide.co.uk users. The second series was no different. We just love watching Karl Pilkington attempting to broaden his horizons and hating every minute of it.
