Good film
Enjoyed this, certainly deserves better than 5.4/10. so i'll give it a 7.3/10, maimly for the special effects, still don't see why Cruise is so big, must be The Church looking after him.

A Reasonable Effort
Most of the comments here are by people who are incapable of assessing a Tom Cruise performance or film objectively, disregarding his views about religion. This is far better than the atrocious 1953 version because it stays fairly close to the story (well, Tripods for a start)in spite of the inevitable Americanising. The Tim Robbins character is a blend of the minister and the soldier. He was never going to fight back; that was the whole point.

Spielberg's Worst ever Film
Spielberg is a great director, but he really messed up here. Terrible film around, but that girl, I mean, you just wished she'd get swashed right from the start.

Screaming and out of tune singing
The whole film is ruined by Dakota Fannings high pitched hysterical screaming, and Tom Cruise attempting to sing the US National Anthem, is a cringing joke, which tries to link to 'Born on the 4th of July' - Just Horrible. Great Film otherwise. I really enjoyed it. The Tripods are fantastic.

Curiously poor
Weak film with the low point being the 'hero' deciding to kill Tim Robbins who finds the courage to fight back against the invading Martians.

Look up what went on during this movie
Tom and his gestapo (cult of scientology goons) insisted on changes to practically everything, yes this mob like cult really made this movie. I urge you not to believe me but to look it up for yourself.

The Worst of the World’s Cinema
SS & TC at ‘their’ best. i.e. Mediocre to the rest of the cinema world. They should hang their heads in shame, wasting time & money on this ‘take the money and run’ tosh. Have an early night instead, you’ll only be disappointed.

Cruz
I tried scientology but it didn't agree with my irritable bowels. Perhaps it would have been easier if I was shorter.

the musical?
oh, i guess you mean the album by jeff wayne. well i am hung up about THE BOOK. maybe you have heard of a guy called h. g. wells? he must have rolled right over in his grave while this was being made. the '53 modernization/adaption was a great film, this wasn't. they might as well have had he-man fighting the martians!

not great
The kind of sci-fi film i like but tom cruise is terrible. how does he get work. It feels like cruise is reading lines of page ever time he speaks.

Decent
A decent retelling that gives a 'modern-day' slant. Believable characters and strong special effects. Worth a watch as long as you aren't hung up on the musical, the original 50's retelling, or the excellent book it was loosely based on. The Orson Welles radio adaptation is a classic and worth hunting down on the internet. Give it a go it's really not as bad as people try and make out. Remember it was never intended to be a faithful telling of the book, it is a re-imagining and as such a very good sci-fi flick.

p.s.
By the way, the film is okay, defintely benefits from a home cinema system. However the ending, though similar to the book's, just doesn't really suit a blockbuster film, it falls a bit flat.

The Irony!
Oh Mr Lucas. Presumably you have not read the book, or if you have then don't recall the words from the first chapter that also feature in the music? '"The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one," he said.' I can only hope that your comments, like Geoff's, were said in jest!

Literacy
Literacy is a sought after commodity. There are namely those amongst us who are so pitifully illiterate it's not funny. Such as the esteemed Geoff Wayne. This movie is based on a classic book by HG Wells. Perhaps you know what books are? It was also the subject of a famous adaptation by Orson Welles. (Different spelling, no relation.) But then again you'd know that if you were literate, wouldn't you? Or did you seriously think Spielberg would make a movie as dumb as your illiterate comments?
