I was rather disappointed with this BBC version of South Riding. It compares badly against the 1939 film and the 1974 ITV versions. Indeed it is a pity that the ITV freeview channels could not show again the 1974 version, although it is available on DVD. The same can not be said of many more serials from the seventies and eighties including the excellent 1979 series The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie of these no DVDs exist. But to return to this version of South Riding the trouble with it is it's a very much a cut down version. Another thing is the bad casting, of the three main charactors from the original novel namely Sarah Burton, Robert and Midge Carne they were just to young for the parts they are playing. At least when the BBC took another ITV series Upstairs Downstairs they made it as a sequel to the original which worked well this remake did not.
