Vincent D'Onofrio
Cannot believe thats him from CSI. This must be one of the best films going about Vietnam - not all blood and guts.

Masterpiece
The drill sergeant deserves an oscar for his dialogue & acting during the opening 20 mins. or so.Brilliant film overall.

Awesome
As in most Kubrick movies the genius is in the detail and the cinematography. The two parts to the film are to enhance the dichotomy between the training and reality of war. The more you watch it the more you understand its message. A Kubrick trait.

Agree
I agree with the comment by ajjam - its seems like two different films from start to finish - from training to war- not sure its one of Kubricks best

Kubrick does Vietnam
War movies in the 1980s stopped being about WWII and instead became about Vietnam. Stanley Kubrick's take on the genre is very much his own. It starts at boot-camp, and that is a story all in itself, as R Lee Ermey will forever be associated with wanting to be be your drill instructor. It then moves to Vietnam and it could just as easily be a separate story. Therein lies the main flaw with this movie. Kubrick films have a tendency to start somewhere and take a wild tangent, but this movie's two parts feel as if they were two stories stuck together in order to make a full-length feature film. Also, whilst the UK shooting locations stood in well for Parris Island boot camp, it lacks the jungle to pull-off being Vietnam, and the scenes at the end look more like the US liberating central Europe than fighting in South East Asia. Put this all together and you have s strange mix of the sublime and the ridiculous. Yep - definitely a Kubrick movie.

"M-I-C-K-E-Y...M-O-U-S-E"
The dehamising regime at the training base that teaches the troops to turn on those weaker and show no humanity. The young female guerilla taking them out, scared but prepared to fight to the death to get these gorillas out of her land. And the yanks singing the mickey mouse club theme as their marching song in the final scene pretty much sums it all up. A vacuous and barbaric people exporting a vacuous and barbaric culture via napalm, carpet bombing and trash junk food culture.
