Holmes is conducting research in a hospital morgue when he stumbles upon a string of murders, crimes that went undetected by the staff as the victims were all weak or terminally ill. Tapping into his own vast knowledge of pathology, as well as Watson's medical knowledge, the sleuth deduces the people were killed by one of the medical staff - a so-called 'angel of mercy'.
