Having used her protected ranking to enter the qualifying stage at last year's tournament, 2014 Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard made it into the main draw and won her opening round match against Dayana Yastremska 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. In the men's draw, another player to make use of their protected ranking was British player Kyle Edmund, who had been struggling with chronic injuries for a couple of years, but he had the misfortune of being drawn against former world number three Dominic Thiem and was subsequently defeated 4-6, 1-6
