The Big Questions Comments

Equality when it suits them.
Women bang on about equality. Yes they should be jailed if they commit a crime. They weren't thinking about their families when they broke the law.

End of World
The Earth cannot continue along it's present path without something going; & that could be us, the human race. We are changing the weather by removing huge areas of rain forest in South America, Asia & Africa. These huge rain forests contain approx. half of the free fresh water available to us. If we planted all of the forests back in place, we may get back to normal weather conditions in about 250 years.

humour in religion
I went into our local Abbey where two people were accepting fees to enter the establishment. One of the fee collectors made a comment about the temperature being cold. I said, 'Ah God's Frozen people'. My comment was greeted with a stony silence. There were also cold stares which made the atmosphere even colder. Religious humour seems to depend on where the humour is used.

Shame
on Nicky Campbell, in his presentating style, to make light of such an immotive problem, the middle east crisis. He seemed delighted to let things turn ugly too...........not good television as he obviously thinks otherwise!

I like the debate on The Big Questions. Must give the audience more say. Some scientist will never understand how astrology works.

human right and religion
first we have to understand culture and religion. People often get mixe up. secondly what is divine, who wrote it and for what purpose? is it a pure context. Lastly, we the users of human right in principles is it put in to practice fairly?

Relevant
Always relevant and always leading to new legislation which solves society's problems. This show packs a punch with guests of a high caliber small egos (and high IQ). Future politics should be based on these shows amd the vast expertise of the guests who give of their time freely. In one sentence, the show makes a great difference. Pity there isn't a similar show for less intelligent viewers.

Improving the debate
There needs to be far more input from members of the audience. The invited speakers in the front row are allowed to dominate the programme and to engage in argument and point scoring. This plea is for a more civilised debate which would be thought provoking and intelligent without in any way reducing what one might term it's entertainment value.

Immigration to boost economy ?
There has been in excess of fourty years for the consecutive administrations to adopt an educational policy of 'vocational training' for the non-academics.Doesn't leave much to the imagination when those that have little to call their own have to move over in favour of migrants both educated and un-educated competing for homes and jobs.I should think that the British under-achievers should be de-flated,disappointed and ignorant to the governments (conveniently criminalised)interpretation of objections AKA racism !

The so called christians on this show are all imposters. They claim to live by the bible but only pick and choose what suits them. The silly woman who first announced that Newton was the greatest mathematician who ever lived, then used his 17th century religious beliefs to prove God. I doubt if a 21st century Newton would agree with his 16th century self.

Everybody's lost it.
We're awash with absolute numpties that don't have a clue. Watching 5 minutes of this confirms it. These idiots will Never solve the problems that they seek to alleviate because they're enmeshed with cultural conditioning to such a degree that they can no longer see the woods for the tree's. You will never come to know what your true purpose in this Life is so long as you have subscribed to the psychological conditioning of your family, friends and society at large. These people, like the majority in a closed society, are not entirely sane. It's not really a surprise that there is a nanny state and everybody feels so anxious and uncertain and feels the need to cling to ideologies and myths just to cope. when you see supposedly mature and intelligent individuals coming together like this and discussing the Bible as if to suppose it is some kind of divine prophecy, and arguing and nitpicking at their difference of perceptions in everything from politics to ethics without a hint of genuine insight. So unbelievably ridiculous, I don't know how to take any of them seriously. A bunch of 5 yr olds could tell them in 5 mins why they're mental and save the trouble of all this debating. Though Im not entirely sure anybody seems able enough to get out of their own way for long enough to hear.

why can one lady dominate and shout her views over all others? Nicky Campbell needs to do more to keep a balanced and fair input to the debate.

Peter Hitchens
The BIG Question is why is Peter Hitchens always on the show and allowed to dominate proceedings ? Is it simply that he is so out of tune with the populace that he is guaranteed to be provocative ?

Public involvement
it is sad that the public is invited and practically ignored and Nicky only foicus on those on the front and some of bthem are allowed to talk over and over again. T hey may as well stop at home and they would get more say on line.it needs to be more balance. This week I saw a lady with her hand up all the way through the discussion on the topic of executing murders.

Censored?
I sent in a fairly rational and controlled comment after last Sundays programme but it has not been displayed. Is this because it was not considered apt or sensible (which would be surprising in view of some of the forum comments, or is it because I dared to point out that the Koran is definitely not the word of God.

Religeous Fundamentalists.
All religeous fundamentalists are lacking in the most important quality..MERCY.This was displayed by the fundamentalists on this Sundays programme.Jesus Christ is the Fount of Divine Mercy. What did he pray for his killers:Forgive them Father for they know not what they do.What did he say to the thief on the cross:Today you will be with me in paradise.

Islam-not the word of God
What is so tragic in the 21st Century is that the vast majority of mankind have not be taught to be honestly critical. If they had been so educated no-one would accept the absurd claim that the Koran is the word of 'God'. It is full of flaws that are carefully explicated by many writers. All Muslims should read Ibn Warraq on the Koran when at least those whose critical faculties have not been totally suppressed by their upbringing and culture will reject, forever, such nonsense. Of course the same could be applied to all 'holy books' of whatever creed.

Covering head or wearing hijab isn't modesty except male dominated socity!
Yes, I totally agree with Yvonne. It's absolutely male dominated society. Without covering one's head still women can well be modest. The West doesn't ask any woman to wear mini skirts or low cut top. They can wear salwar kameez or sari what ever they like and still can be modest without wearing hijab or covering your head! At the end of the day all religions are male-dominated but the only difference is most religions have changed towards better society except that high percent of Islamic culture is still following “the obsolete” is only showing their backwardness rather than modesty. Like the historian David Starkey said in another programme “we cannot liberate” unless they want to liberate themselves. Deep down, I think most women in Islamic culture and countries are afraid of men. Like one of the audience said, women can talk for themselves, even if they want not to cover their heads or wear hijab still they do because there might be risk to their lives.

I love this show. I believe it does what it says on the tin - it airs the big questions and brings together interesting, relevant, and informed people to provoke thought whatever your view. Of course if your mind is not open, you will not like it

Praise for this show
I never miss it; all of us die either now ( by accident) or in the future - this show goes some way to show how we can reach the fulfillment of eternal youth - 'The Just shall shine like the sun' but he who does not bring forth fruit will wither' says Christ. We rae all going to finish up in eternity either old or young forever.

Waste of time
Watched this programme some time ago. Not any more, its a waste of good TV time. Boring know it alls all bawling each other out. Mind you I detest anything with pious religious people on who believe in big imaginary friends in the sky. For goodness sake are they still mentally about 7 years old? Take this programme off air asap. Put some comedies on BBC? PLease?

Was it the Peter Hitchens show? Why was this arrogant, right-wing bigot allowed to dominate the discussions? Weak production and chairmanship, and a dismal standard of debate.

Is Nicky the right host?
I've watched many similar debates, presented in an impartial manner. Nicky Campbell, however, manages to quash any interesting avenues if they don't conform to his agenda. He is clearly biased in every show, which is unfortunate when such important topics are being discussed.

Is the bible relevant show
I think religion is a con, look at it, its the best con ever, make people buy into a product, ie religion. I have been to Rome and seen the Vatican city! It was sickening, By playing on peoples fear of hell and silencing any so called heritics, religion has grown, set back human development, ie the sacking of Alexandria and has tricked people into giving the church their lives. Faith is not the question, the religious institutions have a lot to answer for, they are power hungry con artists

why do the wrong people get to say the most
on the 13 feb program at southampton the ex prisoner got to speak for and ages, and when a young girl of islamic faith was speaking she was rushed, "I thought that she was brilliant" especially when she said " please i havent finished speaking" what she said was simple, truthfull, and really sencible "well done " perhaps the compare should interupt the people who really go on about nothing.

Peter Hitchens
Saw Peter Hitchens slagging off football on this mornings show (Sun 6th Feb). I wouldn't expect anything else from a man who thinks he's superior in every way to his fellow human beings. Maybe if he took the time to get into football as a pastime (although I know its beneath him) he would understand the game a bit more and start to enjoy it? It might even stop him walking around with a face like a smacked arse as well? Just a thought.

The burqa
you commenting on, if it is correct for women to be able to wear a burqa in a shop and not being told to take it off, it is actually called a niqab which covers the face get your information right, then you go on to say that as a man if you wore it into the shop they would obviously tell you to take it of because they would ask you what is your religious reasons and dn't say islam becuase they would just laugh at you, coz once again you have the wrong information WOMEN wear the niqab and men don't.

should the unemployed work for benefits
Would it be cheaper in the long term, allowing people to retire, pay them, then vacate the jobs for the youger people. Isn't it the normal order of things in the work place for people to move up and forward, retiring, freeing up the jobs for the younger generation and others who want /need jobs. Paying unemployment benefits + other benefits surely costs more. The older generation can be used to train the younger ones.

the right to die
I fear the Power structures. I am 79 yers old, in good health but have had a long experience of health and illness. HOW I die is important to me - that I have 'a good death' if that is possible. I had a Living Will but found that not adequate as those 'in charge' of me when in hospital from doctors to nurses had their own 'belief systems'which they would impose on me. It was clear that the decision would not be mine, despite my Living Will. However, experience had taught me that the results (possibly long-term) of decisions by members of the medical profession would be mine and that of my family. One instance which has influenced my life from the age of 34 was that I was given phenobarb when pregnant. This has not been given for a long time but the effects have been long term for my life and family members. There have been other instances in my life, fortunately not with such long term effects. I now have a Notice of Advanced Decision which has improved the situation - but initially my G P remarked that 'it is not legal you know'. In fact, I hope, he is wrong.
