Black Doves series 2: Helen 'walks a more treacherous line than ever' as spy thriller returns for more explosive stunts
It's back, with a great new twist!
Black Doves is back on Netflix this November with series 2, bringing its own explosive brand of fireworks as unlikely spy Helen Webb “walks a more treacherous line than ever”.
That’s putting it mildly, to be honest… The secret operative is working for Black Doves, but also married to the UK’s new Prime Minister.
Helen, who looks like she wouldn’t win a battle with a housefly, is a trained killer. She looks like the glamorous, smiling wife of politician Wallace Webb. But she’s, in fact, working for the Black Doves. They, in turn, gather state secrets and sell them to the highest bidder.
And who better to sell state secrets than the wife of the PM? Series 2 picks up shortly after the end of Black Doves series 1, and the stakes are higher than ever. Here’s everything you need to know ahead of its return, including plot, cast, start date, and filming locations…

Release date of Black Doves series 2
Black Doves is returning for a series 2 on Thursday, November 05, 2026. Netflix confirmed the spy thriller would be back even before series 1 had aired in December 2024. It was a pretty confident move for the streaming service.
They confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “A reminder that Black Doves comes to Netflix later this year – and it’s already been renewed for a second season!”
One fan reacted: “Must have quite a bit of faith in the show if it’s been renewed BEFORE it’s even out yet. Looking forward to seeing Knightley in an upbeat scenario again.”
Another added: “Great news! Spies, intrigue, amazing cast, brilliant writing, can’t wait to dive in!”
As is always the case with Netflix (with the odd pesky exception), the whole of Black Doves series 2 will land as a boxset.
What’s the plot of Black Doves series 2?
Helen continues to betray her nation’s secrets to the covert organisation she serves: the Black Doves. But after the misadventures of last Christmas, and with her husband Wallace (Andrew Buchan) preparing to become Prime Minister, she is walking a more treacherous line than ever.
Helen’s enigmatic handler Mrs Reed (Sarah Lancashire) goes ‘missing’ at the beginning of Black Doves series 2. But she is, in fact, ensnared in a ruthless plot to undermine her position in the Black Doves. Helen reunites with her best friend Sam (Ben Whishaw) in a bid to get to the bottom of Reed’s disappearance.
Viewers will see how the once high-end triggerman has fallen on hard times, spending lonely nights drinking in Soho bars and taking on low-rate hits. As Sam and Helen search for answers, they discover that “loyalties are weaponised, trust is shattered, and the fight to protect the people they love could cost everything”.
Netflix tells us: “With all the explosive wit of series 1, Helen and Sam’s mission leads them back to old friends and enemies, through the dark decisions and painful sacrifices of their pasts, and right to the heart of the Black Doves.”
Crucially, Black Doves series 2 delves into Mrs Reed’s past, stemming from a terrible secret about her early career as an agent in Berlin. A plot unfurls to bring her and the rest of the Black Doves down and she is forced to confront the terrible decisions of her past.
In short, the series is preposterous, but fun. Most of the main cast couldn’t fight their way out of a paper bag, but don’t expect reality and there’s no reason why you won’t enjoy this.

How many episodes is Black Doves series 2?
Black Doves series 2 is six episodes of roughly one hour each (well, anything between 45 minutes and 60).
It lands as a boxset. So give it six hours to binge if you were so inclined.

Black Doves reviews: Is it any good?
Series 1 of Black Doves received a BAFTA nomination, and received some mostly positive reviews. In fact, it retains a not too shabby 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Guardian’s Rebecca Nicholson said: “This is a schlocky thriller, stuffed like a turkey with action, twists and a good sense of humour.”
Variety’s Aramide Tinubu called it: “A twisted thriller of a series, Black Doves is a fun, poignant and dizzying journey centring on friendship and connection.”
Empire said: “All the work put into the characters culminates in a series of immensely satisfying face-offs and enough twists to leave you spinning.”
Our own review described it as “very entertaining, even though it’s not perfect”.
