Ludwig series 2 is currently in production and BBC One has revealed there’ll be some new famous faces joining the line-up – as well as some other exciting plot news.

The first series landed on BBC One in October 2024. It introduced John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor, a highly intelligent, hermit-like puzzler-setter. His life took a very interesting turn when his twin brother disappeared…

In a bid to find out what happened to him, John posed as his twin James – a DCI in the local police force. Drafted in by his pushy sister-in-law Lucy, John reluctantly assumed his brother’s identity as a detective on Cambridge’s major crimes squad.

And he slowly began to piece together some clues as to his brother’s whereabouts by the cliffhanger Ludwig series 1 ending. So it’s no surprise at all that BBC One recommissioned the detective drama. Here’s everything we know so far about series 2 of Ludwig.

Is there a series 2 of Ludwig?

The BBC has confirmed there WILL be a series 2 of Ludwig.

Mark Brotherhood, the show’s creator, said: “We’ve all been blown away by the reaction to Ludwig. I’m thrilled we get to come back with a whole new set of puzzles for him to solve in his unique way.”

Lead actor David Mitchell, who plays John in the Ludwig cast, chimed in: “I’m delighted that John Ludwig Taylor has failed to escape the clutches of the Cambridge police and will have to continue to face up to the city’s alarming conundrum-based crime wave.”

He also explained the riddle behind James’ cypher, saying: “Even over the whole first series, that’s not all solved, which is why we hoped for more.”

Our Ludwig review described the BBC One comedy series as “a brilliantly bonkers twist on a very popular format – the murder mystery”. Meanwhile, The Guardian said: “Mitchell is as brilliant as ever at playing the part he was born to play”. Radio Times called it “a real treat”.

Series 2 will continue to follow John in his new role as the consultant for the Cambridgeshire Police.

What is the plot of the returning BBC One series?

Cast and crew are currently filming the much-anticipated series 2 of BBC One’s acclaimed detective series Ludwig. In the upcoming new episodes, John continues to be “brilliant at solving, puzzles but hopeless at everything else”.

The synopsis tells us: “Picking up from where things were left at the end of series 1, master puzzle-setter John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor is now a Crime Scene Consultant working on ‘impossible’ crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority. No longer having to masquerade as his brother, he’s openly more ‘Ludwig’ than ever – brilliant at solving puzzles but hopeless at everything else.”

However, viewers of series 1 will know that John’s identical twin brother is still missing. And now that John is an official employee of the station, he’s forbidden from using any police resources to look for James or uncover exactly what he was investigating…

Of course, we all know that won’t stop John at all – or Lucy, his sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother.
