Coronation Street has aired the beginning of Gary’s prison journey, as he met cellmate Jonesy – but where have you seen actor Carl Rice before?

Earlier this week Gary was sentenced to eight months in prison for his part in covering up Theo’s death – despite Sarah (the actual killer) walking free.

While everyone is worrying about how he will cope, Gary came face-to-face with his new cellmate, Jonesy. But Coronation Street fans may recognise the actor who plays him.

Who plays Gary’s cellmate Jonesy in Coronation Street?

Jonesy is played by actor and comedian Carl Rice. And if you think you recognise him, you probably do. As Jonesy is not the first character he has played on Coronation Street.

And strangely enough, despite previously playing an entirely different character, his first Coronation Street storyline had quite a few similarities to this one.

Carl previously played bad-boy Ian Rigby, during Rob Donovan’s brutal prison storyline way back in 2015.

Ian had arrived as Rob’s cellmate and quickly became his right-hand-man inside. Carl played the part for several months, but was last seen on-screen in December 2015.

However, away from Coronation Street, Carl has appeared in quite a few TV shows. Many could probably recognise him from his regular role in Brookside. He also starred in ITV children’s drama Children’s Ward, and Sky comedy’s Trollied.

What is his new storyline in the soap?

In tonight’s episode (October 23) Gary and Jonesy seemed to be getting on just fine at the beginning. But when Ross promised to be there for Gary no matter what he needed, it looked like he knew more about Gary’s cellmate.

And this makes sense as when Carl’s return was announced a few weeks ago, The Sun also reported that his new storyline could tie into the current toxic masculinity storyline involving Ross.

Not much is known about Ross’ storyline, but it’s very obvious that it’s heading down a dark route. And we also still have to discover if he did anything to Cassie that caused her show exit.

However, Jonesy will definitely be a big part of Gary’s prison storyline in Coronation Street. And actor Mikey North has already teased that things will get dark for the bad-boy.

He explained to Metro: “It’s prison, so it’s never going to be an easy ride. Gary’s cellmate Jonesy is a great character, and Carl Rice plays him brilliantly. There’s going to be lots coming up with Gary having to protect himself inside, so there’s so much going on there.

“Jonesy is definitely another little Corrie villain who’s popped up.”

So while we don’t know the extent of the storyline, we should definitely be keeping a close eye on Jonesy.
