The White Lotus has quickly found its replacement for Helena Bonham Carter, after her unexpected exit from season 4 – and it’s someone who’s technically been in it before.
While there have been exceptions (like Jennifer Coolidge and Natasha Rothwell), each season of Mike White’s hotel-set comedy-drama has one thing in common. They always change up the casts.
It’s to the show’s benefit, in more ways than one. Each series feels fresh, and it means the show is likely to attract formidable talent (given they know they won’t be locked into a multi-season commitment).
For example, The White Lotus season 4 has already tapped Steve Coogan, Vincent Cassel, and Heather Graham. However, despite joining the ensemble earlier this year, Helena Bonham Carter has dropped out.
Who has replaced Helena Bonham Carter in The White Lotus season 4?
Laura Dern has been cast in The White Lotus season 4, filling the gap left by Helena Bonham Carter’s departure.
Dern, an Oscar-winner known for her roles in Jurassic Park, Big Little Lies, and her many collaborations with David Lynch, is also friends with White.
It’s unclear exactly who she’ll be playing, but it won’t necessarily be Carter’s role. As reported by Deadline, she’ll portray a new character that White is developing specifically for her.
However, the role is said to be central to season 4’s story.

Reacting to the news, one fan wrote on X: “This is literally the best news I could ever get.”
“Suddenly I’m going to start watching The White Lotus,” another posted. “Laura Dern on The White Lotus, best day of my life,” a third wrote.
Why did Helena Bonham Carter leave The White Lotus?
Carter’s exit from The White Lotus was reportedly due to creative issues with her character in season 4.
In a statement, an HBO spokesperson explained: “It had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.
“The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks.
“HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”
Carter was reportedly the first actress on White’s list for the fourth season. Details about her character haven’t been revealed, but we know season 4 will be set in France.
Hasn’t Laura Dern already been in The White Lotus?
Yes! While she never appeared on-screen, Laura Dern was part of The White Lotus cast in season 2.
She played Abby Di Grasso, the wife of Michael Imperioli’s Dominic. In fairness, it was an uncredited cameo.
Does this mean she’ll be playing Abby again? It’s incredibly unlikely, as Dern probably offered her voice because of her longtime friendship with White.
They worked together on 2007’s Year of the Dog and HBO’s Enlightened, a comedy-drama co-created by Dern and White.
As one fan put it on social media, “Laura Dern is officially the first person to play two different roles in The White Lotus universe.”
