This City is Ours returns with series 2 and – alongside a phenomenal cast – viewers might recognise singer George Gallagher who pops up at a crucial moment.

Episode 5 is arguably one of the most tense in the series. You’ll find no spoilers here… Suffice to say the subsequent events have momentous consequences for the Phelan family, Micheal Kavanagh and Banksey.

At the centre of the episode is a party. The gang attend Jamie Phelan and fiancée Melissa’s engagement bash, unaware that there’s imminent danger ahead… They party hard, and dance to the late Ronnie Phelan’s favourite song.

Viewers might recognise the singer George Gallagher, who also appeared in series 1. He’s known for his appearance on a BBC singing competition more than 10 years ago…

Liverpool singer George Gallagher returns to This City is Ours series 2

George Gallagher, a vocal artist from Bootle, Liverpool, first cameoed on This City is Ours in series 1. The singer appeared as an old-style crooner in episode 1 of the BBC crime drama, which originally aired in March 2025.

He performed classic songs like House of Bamboo during a viral christening scene that sparked a nationwide social media line-dancing trend. He was also credited for musical appearances as the series’ signature soundtrack style continued to feature his vocals.

George is back in series 2. This time, he croons his way through episode 5’s engagement party. Wearing a rather dashing tuxedo with black bow tie, he sings a cover of Bobby Darin’s More, before moving on to his rendition of the 1950s hit The House of Bamboo.

It’s another iconic This City is Ours scene, as the Phelan family and friends recreate the line-dance from series 1.

Who is George Gallagher?

No relation to the famous Oasis Gallagher brothers, George achieved national recognition after winning the BBC One singing competition Frank Sinatra: Our Way in 2015.

A professional singer since 2007, Liverpudlian George joined seven talented but unknown music acts from across the UK to perform their own unique renditions of songs made famous by Frank Sinatra. The aim? To win a slot at his centenary concert.

Alexander Armstrong and Rochelle Humes hosted the talent show, while a panel of celebrity Sinatra devotees offered up critiques of each performance. They included musician and producer Dave Stewart, funny man and performer Rufus Hound, and singer and broadcaster Mica Paris.

George, who was 22 at the time, won the competition. He went on to perform at a Frank Sinatra centenary concert, celebrating the 100th birthday of the legendary singer.

House of Bamboo became a viral sensation after series 1

When George Gallagher, now 33, was first asked to record House of Bamboo for BBC drama This City is Ours, he didn’t expect it to be any more than a background tune.

But as soon as episode 1 of the series aired – including a Christening scene featuring his singing – it became an instant viral hit. Fans across the country were posting their own videos of the dance on social media…

A remix by Lee Butler and Christian Davies was later released. George told theguideliverpool.com: “Stephen Butchard, the incredibly talented writer of This City is Ours, is actually a friend of my dad’s. He thought this particular character, the crooner, would suit me.”

He added: “And after that it went crazy, it was everywhere, I never imagined how much it was going to blow up.”
