This Morning bosses were today forced to issue Miriam Margolyes an on-air warning after a painful exchange with Andi Peters.

The author and actress had asked Andi ‘what he is’ when making a remark about his skin colour.

Miriam, who is no stranger to making inappropriate comments on live TV, had also wrongly told the presenter he has a “black daddy and a white mummy”.

The 85-year-old was then issued a warning via Andi’s earpiece, with him declaring: “They’re getting nervous, they’re getting nervous.”

Viewers of the ITV daytime show, meanwhile, couldn’t believe the scenes.

Miriam Margoyles in awkward Andi Peters race exchange

Miriam was on This Morning to chat about her new book to Andi and his co-host Christine Lampard. The conversation then turned to accents, given Christine’s thick Irish accent.

Miriam asked Andi: “What are you? Because you don’t have an accent. You’ve got a black daddy and a black mummy.”

Looking shocked, Andi told her: “Both my parents are black.”

She replied: “Oh, both are black? High yella, that’s what they call it in America when people aren’t deeply black.”

Before she could continue any further, This Morning’s producers began speaking in Andi’s earpiece.

“They’re getting nervous now, they’re getting nervous,” Andi warned Miriam.

Looking calm, she referenced ‘inclusion’ and replied: “Don’t be nervous. We’re all welcome.”

The interview ended very soon after, with Miriam asking Christine if she had “offended anyone”. Christine told her she hadn’t.

This Morning’s viewers, however, weren’t quite so sure.

One viewer wrote: “Did Miriam offend Andi? High Yella? Who knew….” Another added a ‘shocked’ emoji and said: “Miriam nearly did the ‘where are you really from’ there.”

A third penned: “Well that was awkward.”

And someone else chimed in: “Margoyles thought she was being so dei and clever with the ‘high yella’ comment. Well, Miriam you were being exactly the opposite, you fool.”
