7 Coronation Street characters we'd love to see more of in 2026

They need more attention

2025 has saw a lot of different Coronation Street storylines air, but some characters need more attention in 2026.

Some characters have been pushed to the sidelines recently despite having the potential to deliver us with some great drama.

Here’s who we’d love to see be given more of a chance to shine over the next year.

1. Ryan

Ryan Connor absolutely deserves more screen time on the cobbles because, let’s be honest, he’s the human equivalent of a walking plot magnet. He’s got charm, chaos and can throw himself into many scenes with different characters.

At the moment, he’s felt like more of a side character to aid in both Debbie’s dementia storyline and Carla and Lisa’s love story.

While we love Uncle Ry Ry being there to give his loved ones some support and comfort and a cheeky smile, we’d love him to have his own storyline this year.

2. Mary

Mary Taylor needs more screen time in 2026, because Weatherfield just isn’t Weatherfield without her gloriously bonkers wisdom.

She’s been on the cobbles since 2008, delivering poetic life advice, accidental chaos and the kind of one-liners that should honestly be framed in the Kabin window. But, her only memorable, hard-hitting storyline was really that of compulsive lying son Jude coming into her life. And, that was ages ago.

Mary’s comedy timing is gold, her heart is huge, and every time she does pop up – whether she’s catastrophising in Dev’s shop or oversharing in the café – she steals the scene. With so many characters wrapped in heavy drama, Corrie desperately needs Mary’s quirky sparkle back front and centre. Bring on peak Mary mayhem!

3. Glenda

Let’s face it, Weatherfield could use Glenda Shuttleworth‘s charm, sass, and occasional chaos more than ever.

Since joining Coronation Street in 2012, she’s delivered hilarious one-liners, iconic fashion choices, and awkward social encounters that keep the cobbles lively.

Her interactions with George, Todd, and the rest of the Street always spark comedic gold, yet she often gets sidelined. Remember that brief pub burglary? Whatever happened to that?

Corrie needs more Glenda moments – whether she’s meddling, overthinking, or accidentally creating mayhem, her quirky energy is essential. Let’s see Glenda in the spotlight, perhaps even away from the bar, shaking things up and giving us all the laughs we deserve!

4. Nina

Ever since Nina broke up with Asha a couple of years ago, her place in the soap seems solely confined to that of working at Roy’s Rolls which is ashame.

If she does venture outside during her spare time, she tends to hang out with those younger than her, even being grouped in with the Weatherfield teens for parties and social events. Just a tad awkward.

Her bond with Roy is super cute, and she’s a really interesting character with a lot of layers. Her witty and dark sense of humour is great to watch, but we’d love to see her back at the centre of the drama again. Please!

5. Amy

Amy Barlow has been on Coronation Street since 2001, and though she’s grown up before our eyes, 2026 has been surprisingly quiet for her.

As Tracy and Steve’s daughter, she’s got family drama practically written into her DNA, yet viewers have barely seen her navigating life on the cobbles this year.

Amy is smart, sassy, and perfectly positioned for storylines. She could even be seen working more on her radio shows and really delivering gossip around Weatherfield. Seriously, Corrie, give Amy more screen time. She’s got the wit, charm, and chaos potential to steal scenes from anyone!

She’s been given huge storylines before, she deserves to have them again!

6. Tracy

Tracy’s had a fairly quiet year this year, seemingly only showing an appearance to make some unkind remarks towards Steve’s new woman Cassie.

She’s dedicated her year to getting revenge on Cassie and participating in a big feud. It’s all been rather petty.

Yes, she was involved in the Rob prison escape storyline, but while this should’ve been an opportunity for Tracy to really shine she was instead sidelined as the storyline focused on Carla instead.

We’d love to see old school Tracy Barlow make an appearance back at the front and centre of things again next year.

7. Gary

Gary used to be a real hardman, didn’t he? When there was trouble, Gary was there to save the day. He’d throw  a few punches and bump the local loan sharks off.

He tried to teach Noah a lesson this year but he really didn’t do a good enough job of it.

It’s safe to say that Gary’s softened. There’s lots of drama in store in Weatherfield for 2026, so perhaps Gary could insert himself into it and help those in need get justice. The Weathy police force could do with the extra pair of hands!
