Claire Sweeney to leave Coronation Street as Cassie Plummer

Claire Sweeney is preparing for a brand new chapter away from the cobbles. Her Coronation Street character Cassie Plummer looks set to bow out in the coming months.

Claire joined the ITV soap in 2023 as Tyrone Dobbs’ mum Cassie. And, she quickly made her mark with plenty of drama and trouble along the way. But after two years in Weatherfield, she’s now heading off for a very different spotlight moment.

Reports suggest Cassie’s final scenes will air this summer, with The Sun first revealing the exit news.

A Coronation Street spokesperson said: “We wish Claire every success playing Miss Hannigan and congratulate her on being offered a role she has long wanted to play. Cassie will be on the cobbles until the summer during which time she will continue to make her presence felt in Weatherfield leading up to a great exit storyline.”

While details of her departure are being kept tightly under wraps, it’s been teased that Cassie’s exit will be anything but quiet, with fans expected to see an “explosive” finish for the character.

Away from Corrie, Claire is stepping into the iconic role of Miss Hannigan in Annie the Musical, a part she has long wanted to play.

A source said early hopes she could juggle both jobs didn’t work out due to the scale of the tour. This made her decision to leave inevitable.

The UK tour kicked off in May 2026 in Wimbledon and runs through to March 2027, ending in Leicester, giving fans plenty of chances to see her on stage.

Claire Sweeney teases ‘explosive’ exit for Cassie Plummer as she wraps up filming

Claire Sweeney has now confirmed that she’s finished filming her final scenes on the soap. She’s also teased what Cassie’s exit storyline will look like.

While the key details are being kept back from viewers for now, Claire spoke on Ireland AM this week and hinted: “I can say one word – explosive,” admitting that she ‘couldn’t have asked for a better exit storyline.’

Reflecting on her last day on the cobbles, Claire then looked back on an emotional goodbye: “Corrie, because I’ve been there three years, you know Alan Halsall has become part of the family. Simon Gregson, Kate Ford, Elle [Mulvaney], the crew, they’ve all become like family, and it was hard saying goodbye. It was very, very emotional.”

Cassie’s final scenes are set to involve the appearance of Tyrone Dobbs’ dad. Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks told Digital Spy: “Tyrone’s dad makes an appearance in the show. Needless to say, he comes with quite a bit of drama. It’s going to cause quite a lot of friction within that family, obviously, with Cassie’s history.

“As you know, Cassie’s leaving us, and so it will contribute to her exit, which is going to be massive and quite explosive. It’ll be full of all the twists and turns that you can come to expect from an exit story.”

Claire’s final scenes as Cassie are set to play out this summer, within the next 8 weeks.
