David and Shona Platt’s special episode aired in Coronation Street on ITVX today (Wednesday, November 12), and it looks like their baby will need surgery.

The episode kicked off by showing the same morning but from two different perspectives. Shona’s was the first to play out, with the expecting mum clearly struggling. David’s was next, also struggling but trying to put on a brave face for his wife.

At the hospital, the couple were then told more about their baby’s condition and that Shona would need surgery if they chose to go forward with the pregnancy.

Coronation Street special episode sees both David and Shona crumble

Shona Platt‘s day kicked off with her growing increasingly annoyed with David’s ‘let’s act normal’ approach. She couldn’t eat her breakfast as nerves got the better of her, heading off to work but snapping at Roy.

Roy later followed Shona and told her that she could tell him anything, but Shona couldn’t bring herself to tell him about her baby.

David tried to distract Shona with complete waffle about their dog fancying another dog at the park. Once Shona realised that David was only trying to act strong for her sake, she tried to offer him some words of support as the tears filled in his eyes.

The episode then switched to David’s version of the morning. He was struggling, especially with Audrey’s gushy baby talk at the salon. Making a harsh comment towards client Mary, David headed off as his emotions started to become too hard to keep hidden.

After Shona insisted on going to the hospital alone, David assured her he was going nowhere and headed to the appointment with her.

Shona insists on having surgery for her baby in Coronation Street

During the appointment, the Platts were told that their baby’s mass could be cancerous. They were then offered an abortion, being told that if they wished to continue with the pregnancy it would require a complex exit surgery that came with risks for both mother and child.

Shona didn’t want to face reality and instead only chose to focus on the reveal that their baby is a girl. She then headed home and celebrated the news with the rest of the family, failing to tell them about their baby’s health.

After everyone had gone, David tried to encourage Shona to face reality. Shona told him that there was a chance that their baby could survive and grow up healthy. She was having the surgery.

David Platt then had an opposing view that caused huge tensions, admitting that he didn’t know whether the risk of potentially losing Shona was worth the surgery. He explained that bad things happen all the time and that they’re unavoidable just like Kylie’s death was.

Nevertheless though, Shona was adamant that surgery was the right way forward. But, could this decision cause their marriage to break down?
