Death Valley series 2: Episode 2 guest cast includes Keeping Faith and Baby Reindeer star and comedian from After Life

Death Valley series 2 episode 2 follows a brand-new case: a seaside arson attack that results in the death of a chef, and this is everyone who appears in the guest cast.

It was a jaw-dropper of an opening case for DI Janie Mallowan (Gwyneth Keyworth) and John Chapel (Timothy Spall) in last week’s Death Valley. Not only did they crack another murder, but it ended with poor John getting dumped by Yvonne (Melanie Walters).

In tonight’s (May 24) episode, which you can stream on BBC iPlayer now, the duo head to a small Welsh fishing village. Amid tensions between the local pub and a newly popular fish shack, a chef ends up dead.

Everyone’s a suspect in Death Valley series 2 episode 2, and just like last week’s ensemble, it’s enlisted a guest cast of familiar faces.

Death Valley series 2 episode 2 cast: Roisin Conaty as Karen Hughes

Roisin Conaty is among the first stars to appear on-screen in Death Valley series 2 episode 2. She’s the barmaid and manageress of The Ship, the town’s main pub.

Born in London to Irish parents, the 47-year-old enjoyed early success in 2010 at the Edinburgh Fringe, which launched her comedy career. Over the past 16 years, she’s appeared on Russell Howard’s Good News, Have I Got News For You, and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, among many other panel shows.

She was also part of Taskmaster’s first-ever celebrity line-up, and Conaty co-hosts Last One Laughing with Jimmy Carr.

Acting-wise, Conaty appeared throughout Ricky Gervais’ After Life as Daphne, a local sex worker. She’s also had roles in David Brent: Life on the Road and Greg Davies’ The Cleaner.

Mark Lewis Jones as Gareth Merwin

Mark Lewis Jones is one of the most suspicious locals in Death Valley series 2 episode 2. He plays Gareth Merwin, the town’s fisherman.

The Welsh star has been acting since the mid-’80s, starting off in the likes of The Bill, Casualty, and City. He later appeared in Waking the Dead, Torchwood, and The Passion.

His career reached new heights in the 2010s. He starred in Keeping Faith alongside Eve Myles, Stella, and he even had a small role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

You may have also seen him as Dr Edward Millward in The Crown, Tom Christie in Outlander, and Kinney in Gangs of London. In 2024, he played Donny’s father in Baby Reindeer.

Jones, who has four children, is also an ambassador for Believe Organ Donor Support, Marie Curie UK, and Cerebral Palsy Cymru.

Death Valley series 2 episode 2 cast: Ben McGregor as Joe Richards

Ben McGregor plays Joe Richards, the ambitious (to a fault) head chef at The Ship. While the new food shack attracts all of the local customers, he turns people away with his avant-garde, hit-and-miss cuisine.

If there’s any crossover between Death Valley viewers and those who grew up on CBBC, you may recognise him as Ian from Young Dracula.

Over the past 15 years, he’s appeared in Channel 4’s underrated Fresh Meat, Holby City, and Doctors. In 2021, he starred alongside Julie Hesmondhalgh in BBC crime drama The Pact.

Libby Mai as Tina Bucknall

Libby Mai plays a particularly rude character in Death Valley series 2 episode 2: Tina Bucknall, an “eco-warrior”, sarky tourist with a connection to the victim.

They haven’t been acting long, but they already have some notable credits. For example, they appeared in Midsomer Murders last year, and they were one of the main characters in Channel 4’s Pushers. You may have also seen them in Doctors and The Chelsea Detective.
