What really happened to Kyle’s mum Amy and how Joe Tate ‘killed her’
Amy's death was devastating
Emmerdale tonight (Thursday, July 2), saw Kyle Winchester find out that Joe Tate was actually responsible for his mum Amy Barton’s death.
Lydia had found Graham’s watch in the house and had suggested that he might’ve stolen it. But, Cain then visited Graham and got some answers.
With Cain warning Kyle to stay away from Graham and Home Farm, Kyle then found out how his mum really died.
Kyle found out Amy’s death truth in Emmerdale
This evening in the Dales, Lydia found Graham’s old watch and suggested to Moira that Kyle might’ve stolen it from Graham.
Moira had a word with Cain and soon enough the pair were confronting the youngster over it. Kyle explained that Graham was his friend and had gifted it to him because he thought it might help him.
With this vague answer, Cain stormed over to Home Farm while wanting to know why Graham thought he needed to help his son.
Graham was then forced to tell Cain about Kyle starting the fires. He was only looking out for him. Cain then gave Graham the watch back and told him to stay away from his son. Any help Kyle needed, he could come to his dad for and not Graham.
When Kyle failed to understand why Cain would give the watch away and stop his from seeing Graham, Cain then blurted out that it was because Graham was protective of Joe. And, Joe killed Kyle’s mum Amy.
Of course, Kyle never knew this huge detail about his mum’s death before now. So, the news was a pretty big shock for him.
How did Kyle’s mum Amy Barton die? How was Joe Tate responsible?
Back in February 2025, Emmerdale aired a rather big stunt that saw Amy Barton and some of her fellow villagers fight for their lives in a limo accident.
And, the accident all stemmed back to one man – Joe Tate. At the time, Joe had been planning on performing a secret operation on his half-brother Noah in a bid to steal his kidney.
With Joe drugging Noah, Noah was out of it as he stumbled dangerously across the road. Charity had been driving the girls’ limo when she spotted her son and quickly swerved him.
But, by doing so, the limo then plunged straight into a frozen lake. Poor Suzy Merton lost her life as a result of the crash, with Leyla Harding later dying due to the injuries she sustained too.
The other women then did their best to tiptoe over the ice to reach solid ground. However, on Amy Barton’s turn, the ice gave way and she fell right through. As she started to sink underneath the water, she managed to spot Nate’s dead body under the ice.
Tracy, Nate’s wife, then reached in and pulled Amy out of the water and pulled her over to safety. Amy later went to the hospital but had severe hypothermia. She managed to mutter out the word ‘Nate’ before she suffered her second cardiac arrest and died.
If Joe hadn’t drugged Noah, he wouldn’t have been a catalyst for three women losing their lives – Kyle’s mum Amy included.

Kyle heads to Home Farm determined to get answers, demanding that Kim and Joe tell him whether Joe really killed his mum. The confrontation leaves everyone stunned, and when Graham arrives Kyle rushes away, with Cain soon discovering what has happened. Furious, Cain storms to Home Farm and warns Graham, Kim and Joe to stay away from his son, before Joe forces Graham to choose where his loyalties lie.
Back at home, tensions boil over when Kyle starts a fire in a shed, leaving Monty trapped inside. Cain bravely rescues the dog, but the family are later devastated when Paddy reveals Monty has cancer. As Cain collects Monty from the vets, he reflects on his determination to save the dog while refusing to face his own health struggles, leaving him with a life-changing decision to make.
