Colton Underwood has told his surprised Traitors US co-stars how he came out as gay after starring in The Bachelor.

The Faithful 34, spoke about his past over breakfast following the latest murder in Ardross Castle.

While many of the cast at the table knew Colton’s backstory, not everyone did.

Real Housewives of New York star Dorinda Medley in particular was most taken aback.

Former professional American Footballer Colton had told those around him: “I’ve already cried too much on TV and can’t do it anymore.”

Real Housewife Candiace Dillard Bassett asked: “Oh, did you cry a lot on The Bachelor?” Colton said he was a “hot mess.”

Whipping her head around to face Candiace, Natalie Anderson said: “You know that, right?”

As Love Islander Rob Rausch asks “what”, Survivor star Natalie continued: “That he was on The Bachelor and he hadn’t come out and was dating 30 women.”

Clearly shocked, Dorinda said to Colton: “You went on The Bachelor and you were gay?!”

Colton laughed: “Welcome to the party, Dorinda!” He added: “At that time I was convinced I was a heterosexual!”

Given that Colton found fame in the American version of The Batchelor, you may be just as shocked as Dorinda was to hear the news.

But don’t worry, we’re here to bring you up to speed with exactly what went down!

The Traitors US: When was Colton Underwood on The Bachelor?

Colton first found fame in the 14th season of The Bachelorette, starring Becca Kufrin. The series aired in America in xx and Colton was one of the male contestants, bowing out in week 8.

Colton had revealed to producers that he was a virgin, which is something he claims they jumped upon.

In 2018, he was invited back to the franchise as the main man in The Bachelor and was dubbed ‘The Virgin Bachelor’ as a result. He was tasked with picking a wife from 30 different women.

Colton ended up in a relationship with the series winner Cassie Randolph. But they split in 2020 and it was messy.

Colton has since said in Paul C Brunson’s Got To Talk podcast: “I went into it like, my whole heart was like I’m not going to disclose to them that I’m a virgin no matter what.

“I literally told them I was a virgin on night one of The Bachelorette. I opened it up immediately, and I just gave them everything which they loved. So that’s unfortunately how it sort of came to be, and then it became my entire storyline.”

Colton said his faith and religious upbringing added to his decision to remain a virgin. But secretly, he was also battling with his sexuality.

Colton said he had believed going on The Bachelor would help “force” him down the path of being a heterosexual. He added: “I’m going to be so publicly straight that I will never be able to be gay again.”

When did Colton Underwood come out as gay?

Colton made the brave decision to come out as gay two years later. He made the announcement on the US television show Good Morning America.

Colton said: “I’ve ran from myself for a long time. I’ve hated myself for a long time.

“And I’m gay. I came to terms with that earlier this year and have been processing it. And the next step in all of this was sort of letting people know.”

Colton admitted he had gone to a dark place mentally before coming out. He said his “wake up call” to speak out came after he began having suicidal thoughts.

Colton said he “understood” why both the public and women from his season of The Bachelor could feel “misled”.

He also apologised to his ex-girlfriend, Bachelor winner Cassie. She ended up filing for a restraining order against him after their split.

“I’d like to say sorry for how things ended. I messed up and made a lot of bad choices,” he added.

Is Traitors US star Colton Underwood married?

Colton began dating Democratic strategist Jordan C. Brown in 2021. The couple got engaged the following year before marrying on May 13, 2023. Colton’s full name is now Colton Brown-Underwood.

The couple have since become parents to a son called Bishop who was born via an egg donor and a surrogate.

They announced the news on Instagram, saying: “Our world is a million times better with you in it. Bishop Colton Brown-Underwood. September 26th, 2024.”
