Van Der Valk series 4 episode 2 Hope in Amsterdam welcomes Downton Abbey and Grace stars to the cast
It's another cracking episode
Van Der Valk series 4 continues with episode 2, entitled Hope in Amsterdam, and lead actor Marc Warren stars alongside some recognisable faces in the guest cast.
This week in the Amsterdam-set detective drama, no-nonsense detective Piet van der Valk investigates when an environmental campaigner is murdered on the eve of a global conference. Several potential suspects are caught on CCTV, including Cobie Stegenga, a famous singer who went missing and was presumed dead.
However, some of her fans – including Eddie Suleman – have a theory that she just went into hiding. Either way, she is now the prime suspect in a murder investigation…
Here’s who plays who in the guest cast of Van Der Valk series 4 episode 1.

Van Der Valk series 4 episode 2 guest cast: Raquel Cassidy stars as Anki Bergen
Fleet-born Raquel Cassidy, 58, guest stars as Anki Bergen in Van Der Valk, a family friend of the missing singer and prime suspect. Born to a Spanish mother and an English father, Raquel is probably best known for playing Miss Baxter in Downton Abbey.
She first played Phyllis Baxter, lady maid to the Countess of Grantham (Maggie Smith), in the TV series between 2013 and 2015. She went on to appear in the spin-off films in 2019 and 2025. In the final film, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Baxter became lady’s maid to Lady Mary following the Countess of Grantham’s death.
Raquel has actually been on our screens since the late 90s, when she made her first ever TV appearance as PC Pam Boxer in the crime drama Killer Net. She got her big break in Teachers, playing Susan Gately opposite Andrew Lincoln between 2001 and 2002.
She went on to play Staff Sgt. Neve Kirland in Tamzin Outhwaite drama Red Cap, Cassie in The Worst Week of My Life, and Chris in According to Bex. In 2007, she portrayed Jo Porter in Party Animals, before going on to star as Nancy Weeks in Moving Wallpaper. It’s fair to say, she’s done a lot of comedy in her career, not least playing Mel in Jack Dee sitcom Lead Balloon.
Between 2017 and 2020, Raquel played Miss Hardbroom in children’s TV show The Worst Witch, alongside Bella Ramsey. More recently, she popped up in an episode of Beyond Paradise.

Alexander Cobb plays Jesse Bergen
Lewisham-born Alexander Cobb plays Jesse Bergen in the Van Der Valk episode entitled Hope in Amsterdam. He recently returned to Grace as morally ambiguous Kevin Spinella. He first appeared as the fictional Argus reporter in series 1 in 2021, before returning in series 2 and 3. Safe to say, Roy Grace isn’t much of a fan…
Actor Alexander Cobb is probably best known for playing Ian McLeod in C4 period drama Indian Summers, a role he played from 2015 and 2016. Mr Selfridge fans, however, will recognise him as Sam.
Other notable roles include J.B. in Moon Knight, Iian in Top Boy, Matt Brandon in Ridley, and DS Miller in Towards Zero. He’s also popped up in episodes of Death in Paradise, Father Brown, Vera, and Whitstable Pearl. So you could say he’s a regular on the crime drama circuit!
He’s also a regular on stage, and has appeared in National Theatre Live: The Magistrate, and Antony & Cleopatra opposite Ralph Fiennes.
