Great British Bake Off 2026 star Nikki was tonight seen abandoning Bread Week to head home following the tragic death of her mum – but who else also left?

Nikki had just finished making her Signature Challenge of garlic bread when she suddenly vanished from the tent.

Great British Bake Off host Alison Hammond was forced to step in and present Nikki’s first dish to judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson.

Nikki was still absent when the 2026 bakers moved onto the Technical Challenge.

And by the time viewers got to the Showstopper, Nikki had still failed to return to the tent.

It was then confirmed at the end of the episode that Nikki’s mother had tragically died.

A photo of Nikki and her mum flashed up after the credits rolled with a message that read: “With deepest condolences to Nikki and her family following the loss of her mum Joyce.”

Nikki began the garlic bread Signature Challenge alongside all the other eight contestants.

She had been seen making her Cheesy Pesto Tear and Share Garlic Bread. But once the time was up, Nikki was missing from the tent.

Alison told Paul and Nigella: “Now unfortunately, the lovely Nikki had to go home due to family reasons. So I’m going to step in.”

Alison handed over Nikki’s plate of garlic bread for them to try.

Nigella remarked: “It looks gorgeous.” Paul added: “The garlic is really good. I like the flavour. It’s baked well.It just needs to be more open and proved but it’s baked well.”

Alison told them: “She’ll be pleased.”

The bakers faced the Technical Challenge next. They were tasked with making a batch of eight flatbreads filled with roasted grapes and blue cheese.

Nikki wasn’t there. She was also not present for the Bread Week Showstopper.

Will Nikki be back on The Great British Bake Off?

Alison and co-host Noel Fielding spoke to Paul and Nigella about Nikki before the Showstopper Challenge began.

“To have Nikki go.. It’s a shame she’s not going to be here for the Showstopper. How does that change things?” Alison asked them.

Paul explained: “We’d like to see Nikki come back so we need to give her some space. But I think at least one person will be leaving today anyway.

“If Yannis does a raw dough, that’s three out of three. Molly is at risk again.”

Nikki had encouraged fans to tune in to Bread Week on social media before the episode aired. But she did not reveal her sad family news about mum Joyce.

Who left The Great British Bake Off 2026?

Meanwhile, Bread Week was quite a disaster for some. Gabe and Yannis served up raw dough in the Signature. And ALL of the bakers dished up raw flatbreads in the Technical. Yannis’ was particularly bad.

Overall, Paul branded the bakers at producing the “worst” Technical he had encountered in his 17-year history on the show.

For the Showstopper, the eight remaining bakers had to make a display of enriched breads. It had to consist of  large centrepiece with several smaller breads alongside it, all themed on a ‘celebration’.

Molly and Yannis were most at risk of leaving the tent.

Molly made an autumnal Harvest Basket out of bread. It was filled with smaller breads with pumpkin flavours. But she was told her breads were too dry and a “slightly odd and sour” flavour.

Yannis, meanwhile, made a Viennese Winter Market. Paul criticised him for over-baking his brioche structure. Although he liked the flavour, he also said the bread was too dry.

Despite Nikki’s uncertain departure, Paul concluded: “I think with the standard, someone has to go as well.”

Molly ended up leaving The Great British Bake Off. Tom, meanwhile, was crowned Star Baker for the second time this series.
