Will the real John Sugden please stand up in Emmerdale

Emmerdale has confirmed that Victoria’s long-lost brother and Aaron’s fiancé has indeed been living a lie. He is hiding his true persona from everyone – including Aaron. That’s no mean feat given they live together!

But it seems Aaron is totally unaware of what John is capable of. We’re going to find out what that is in a series of flashbacks. He might appear to be supportive and considerate on the surface, but something very different is lurking underneath.

Will Aaron really get married to a man he doesn’t know at all? Or will he discover the truth before he says ‘I do’?

Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw has teased more about what’s to come: “Since enigmatic and inscrutable John Sugden arrived on our screens last summer, he’s managed to hide some pretty big secrets from his family and friends.

“As his clandestine acts are revealed, the audience has an opportunity to really get inside John’s mind and to finally understand exactly what this mysterious character is really about.”

John’s crimes

Although we don’t yet know what John has been up to, we have our suspicions!

John was the last person to see Nate alive before he supposedly went to Shetland – and Tracy hasn’t heard from him since. We obviously know that’s because he never went to Shetland and is dead at the bottom of a lake. But only Amy Barton knows that and she’s now dead too.

John is the prime suspect in the murder – but did he do it?

He certainly managed to cover up Anthony Fox’s murder with deft authority earlier this year. Cleaning up the crime scene alone, getting rid of the body without any help and taking control of the Dingles and Miligans and covering everything up was something he did with a practiced air about him. So has he done it before? With Nate?

And what about the Aidan Moore mystery? Are we buying that he was an army friend who John couldn’t save? Nope, we are not! Is Aidan another of John’s victims?

We’ll soon find out!
