Cain’s revenge incoming? Why John Sugden’s latest move in Emmerdale might cost him everything

John's playing with fire
Joel Harley

John Sugden practiced a little self-care in Emmerdale tonight (Thursday, June 19) as he got to play the hero for a dangerously drunken Cain Dingle. Still smarting over Aaron’s lies and Robert’s unsettling promise, John was in desperate need of distraction.

This, he found in a guilt and grief-stricken Cain, who was loaded up on a full bottle of his dad’s Dingle-strength moonshine. Ushering Cain home, John set to work getting him even more drunk – then repairing the damage when he collapsed.

All in all, a successful day’s work. But is John playing with fire?

John targeted drunken Cain in Emmerdale tonight

As the episode began, Aaron was still on tenterhooks wanting to know what John wanted to do about the Robert situation. Meanwhile, John was desperate for a distraction, and Aaron’s nagging wasn’t helping.

After sending his husband packing, John found Pollard working alone in the shop. And he wasn’t pleased to hear about his plans to cancel his appointment at the surgery either.

Sensing an opportunity, he offered to make an off-the-books house call as part of his ‘special service’ (that’s what we’re calling it now) in lieu of Pollard’s surgery visit.

Meanwhile, Cain was having another bad day after Tracy informed him he wouldn’t be welcome at Nate’s funeral. After a verbal lashing from Pollard – who reminded him of how awful he’d been to Nate while he was still alive – Cain hit the booze. Hard.

Later, John pulled up at Pollard’s in his van, with his medical kit and syringe ready to go. He was about to get to work when a drunken Cain also turned up – utterly smashed on a batch of Zak’s moonshine he’d gotten from Sam (via Debbie).

Making excuses to Eric, John hustled Cain into his van and drove him back to the farm. There, he kept plying Cain with booze until he collapsed, giving hero John another chance to jump into action…

Robert returned as John celebrated a job well done

John was putting Cain in the recovery position just as Moira returned home. Setting Cain up with the drip he had handy, John was full of excuses as Moira questioned what had happened and why he was there.

As Cain woke up, he was equally confused as to what had happened, seemingly having forgotten about John’s generous servings of whiskey. Meanwhile, Moira was full of praise for ‘hero’ John, boosting the down-in-the-dumps killer’s mood.

John returned home to Aaron, revitalised and full of good cheer. Celebrating with a big snog, he re-iterated that the marriage was firmly back on track. “I feel like I’m back in control,” he sighed, leading Aaron back into the bedroom.

The good mood wasn’t to last though, with the sudden arrival of none other than Robert Sugden, freshly out of prison (again) and very much sticking around.

What happens next in Emmerdale: Tracy and Cain to seek revenge as John’s mistakes add up?

They may not be on speaking terms at the moment, but Emmerdale star Amy Walsh has revealed that Tracy and Cain may not be at each other’s throats for much longer.

In an interview with the Mirror, Tracy star Amy revealed that she and Cain manage to put aside their differences to start playing detective.

“Tracy and Cain do a little list together of who it could it be,” Amy said. “We have ruled out some people we know.”

Given that he’s manipulated them both recently, this spells bad news for John. When asked about the killer Sugden, she teased: “That was left on a bit of a cliffhanger actually. He’s the next name on the list…”

Could Cain and Tracy put two-and-two together to realise that John’s been playing them both? And might John’s actions tonight finally arouse Cain’s suspicions?

What else happened in Emmerdale tonight, Thursday June 19

Unaware of Robert's imminent return, John attempted to distract himself by setting a dangerous plan into motion. Elsewhere, Lewis returned, looking for help from brother Ross. Together with Mack, the pair managed to set aside their differences in order to repair their relationship... and hopefully save Moira from a massive water bill. Elsewhere, sisters Vanessa and Tracy also came to an uneasy understanding, while Charity got some horrifying news. Elsewhere, as Bear disappeared, Paddy began to worry about his dad's mental health.

Ross and Lewis struck a deal

Ross and Mack’s bickering was getting on Moira’s nerves. She’d had a whopper of a bill from the water company, sending Mack into a fresh guilt spiral. Reminding him that the situation was all his fault, Ross pushed him to take action. Just then, Lewis arrived. Lewis was there for a favour. Mack snooping around the loft had alerted the neighbours to his weed operation and he was being evicted – so needed to move the plants rapid. Having fetched the plants, Mack and Ross delivered Lewis’s weeds to a special setup in the barn. Ross had a proposition – he wanted in. However, Lewis wasn’t happy. He insisted that the plants are purely medicinal and had no intention of becoming a ‘real’ dealer. Sweetening the deal, Ross offered Lewis a place to stay at the farm. Can Mack and the brothers Barton make their new venture work?

Tracy and Vanessa set aside their differences

After informing Cain that he wouldn't be welcome at the funeral, Tracy was annoyed to find Vanessa waiting for her back at home. Still angry at her sister for not corroborating her false alibi, Tracy Tracy lashed out at her sister, railing at her for not having her back. Desperate to make amends, Vanessa set up a meeting with the undertaker, and reassured her that she’d cover all the costs for Nate's funeral. Breaking down, Tracy admitted that she’ll probably be in prison by the time the funeral actually happens. Not done with her good deeds, Vanessa also offered to pay for the best solicitor money could buy.

Charity learned the truth about Sarah's cancer

Sarah arose after a sleepless night. It was egg harvesting day, and Sarah was full of excitement, even in spite of the cancer news. At the hospital, a doctor explained details of the procedure to a nervous Sarah and Charity. In the aftermath, Charity was supportive, reassuring her that everything would work out. She could tell that her granddaughter was hiding something though. Just then, the doctor arrived, with news that the procedure had been a success – all she needed to do now was wait. Back at home, an emotional Sarah headed for a lie-down – leaving her phone downstairs. Answering the call, Charity learned about another appointment at the hospital. This one, for her cancer. Returning downstairs to collect her phone and her tea, Sarah was confronted by her confused and angry gran. Sarah tried to downplay the surgery (just a spot of keyhole surgery!) but Charity was fuming to learn that she might have put off the surgery to pursue the IVF. Keen to move on, she reassured Charity that everything was out in the open now, the cancer just a ‘blip’ in her journey. But is Sarah's confidence premature?

Paddy worried about his dad

Following yesterday’s events, Paddy and Mandy discussed the Bear problem. Still tip-toeing around his recent temper tantrums, Paddy set out in search of his dad, hoping to discuss what was up. At the garage, Paddy followed up with Kammy, who revealed that Bear and the bike were missing – leaving behind only a terrible mess. With Bear missing, a worried (but not too worried) Paddy and Mandy brainstormed where he could have gone. He didn’t have to look too far, and soon found his dad holed up alone with his bike. As an exhausted Bear broke down in tears, he confessed that he’d been feeling out of sorts lately – and promised to do better. In return, Paddy told him he could bring the bike back home, where he could resume work there. In The Woolpack, Bear shared a drink with Paddy and Mandy, seemingly in good spirits. As he headed home for a decent night’s sleep, Paddy shared his suspicion with Mandy that his dad’s depressed, and headed down the same dark path that he once was…
