Is Cain leaving Emmerdale? Fears over 'totally different' ending that 'hints' at his death

Fears are growing after Cain's diagnosis
Carena Crawford

Just days after Emmerdale fans feared Moira Dingle was leaving the soap, now Cain Dingle and his future in the Dales has come under scrutiny. So is Cain leaving Emmerdale?

In a special episode that aired tonight – hailed by fans as a triumph – Cain received his cancer diagnosis. The whole half hour was shot differently to any other episode as we went inside Cain’s head to hear his internal thoughts.

But the ending – which aired no music over the credits – has got fans seriously worried. We mean seriously.

Cain’s special episode is a masterpiece

The episode began showing sunset and sunrise with Cain narrating over the top. It quickly became clear only Cain was in focus. The others were around him and could be heard, but mainly as background noise.

What we could hear were Cain’s thoughts and feelings from deep inside. He thought about not deserving Moira, he panicked when he met a man in hospital with prostate cancer that had spread and he went into meltdown over the news he himself has aggressive prostate cancer.

Although the disease hasn’t yet spread, if left untreated it will grow quickly. They want to do a radical prostatectomy. Cain’s brain went into overdrive over the possibilities of incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Cain is now convinced cancer is going to kill him.

Back in the village he gave everyone short-shrift. Ross was told to go away, Sarah was yelled at for calling him ‘Grumpy’ and Sam was snapped at in the Woolpack. Cain even laid into Liam during a chat in the loos.

With his inner monologue saying it is hopeless, Cain went to Zak’s grave where his mind said he doesn’t think he’s strong enough for this. He thinks he’s going to die.

Sarah found him at the grave. Finding his courage, he then told her he wasn’t well. She insisted he didn’t have to go through this on his own.

“I’ve got cancer,” he told her. “Were you scared because I know I am,” he said as she hugged him tight.

Emmerdale ending sparks fears over Cain’s future

As the credits rolled, we could hear no music at all. The Emmerdale theme did not kick in. Instead we just heard the sound of the wind blowing through the trees.

And despite the complaints over incidental music being used too much at the moment, some fans have taken this as a warning sign that Emmerdale is signifying the end of an era for Cain.

“Today’s episode was very eerie,” shared one on social media. “The way it ended with no theme music felt like something that happens at the end of an era. This better not be the start of *that character’s* death storyline.”

Another added: “Maybe they’re letting Cain go and this is gonna be a big send off storyline…”

Is Cain Dingle leaving Emmerdale?

Cain’s future on the soap has not yet been made clear. We do not know whether he will survive this diagnosis.

Actor Jeff Hordley teased to The Mirror: “I think he’s faced with his own mortality here and he knows this is something that could finish him off. He’s lost his mother to cancer so he’s all too aware of what can happen…”

Although that doesn’t give us many clues, it does suggest there’s a chance he could die.

However next week Cain will go back to the consultant with Sarah by his side to hear about the treatment plan. He seems prepared to fight this and the doctor seemed hopeful that although aggressive if they could prevent the tumour spreading, Cain could be okay.

We really hope he is…
