John is back as unhinged as ever and even Kev can't fight him off, what we know about what happens next

Watch out Robron, this is serious

We all knew Christmas Day wasn’t going to go smoothly for Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle in Emmerdale – but we didn’t have a John Sugden return on our bingo card.

Of course, we knew it was coming, but what we didn’t predict was that little John could overpower psycho Kev Townsend. And with Kev now firmly under John’s control, things are getting very worrying indeed…

Emmerdale this Christmas Day saw Robert go missing

Robert and Aaron were concerned about Kev shooting at them again after his attack on Christmas Eve. But Robert was trying to brush over it. He then decided he needed to nip off, worrying Aaron even more.

As Aaron grew more concerned with Robert not having returned, we saw Kev’s deserted old house where someone – presumably Robert – lay face down and tied up.

Except it wasn’t Robert because just as Aaron was about to start a search party, Rob strolled back in, unbothered by anything. He had actually been out to get a hip flask engraved for his love saying ‘kindred spirits’. Cute.

Aaron later gave a speech about what a weird year they have had. Everyone got drunk and had a lovely time, with Aaron passing out on the sofa.

And then John Sugden made his Emmerdale comeback

So who was tied up in Kev’s hideaway? Kev himself! He had been overpowered and knocked out by none other than John Sugden!

Kev was bloodied, dazed and confused as he realised ‘Johnny psycho’ was his captor. John made it very clear he was going to get rid of Kev and Robert so he and Aaron could live happily ever after.

John was later stalking around the village. He overheard drunk Ruby and Caleb talking about how Aaron was passed out at the pub.

As Aaron slept on the sofa, John crept in. He whispered to unconscious Aaron no one loved him as much as he does and they would be together in 2026, no matter what. Chilling.

So what happens next?

John is very determined to get back with Aaron. He’s forgetting the fact he tried to kill him and thinks Aaron will forgive him – if only he can get Robert out of the way.

So how will he dispose of his big brother?

Emmerdale has kept quiet about what John’s next move will be, but we know he is in the cast list for Corriedale, airing on ITV on Monday January 5.

That means he will be around for at least another week. It also means that Kev may not be able to overpower him. While our money was previously on Kev in this scenario, it seems soldier-boy Johnny has some tricks up his sleeve – and his calculating nature outweighed Kev’s brute force.

Will he kill Kev? Or keep him alive and use him as his plot unfolds? Could Kev and John even team up – after all, their goal is the same: split Robron up.

The small problem is that Robert and Aaron love each other and not them, so convincing them might not be as easy as John and Kev think…

Chas's Christmas Day gift in Emmerdale

Liam gave Chas a cardigan. She does love wearing cardigans but apparently she was not impressed with this one. But the big news is, he also gave her a murder mystery evening at a hotel.

And where is the hotel? Only in Weatherfield! What are the chances the event is on Monday January 5, eh?

Ray and Laurel were all loved up

Ray arrived to see Laurel, but Rhona was not happy at all to see them together. Laurel, however, was ecstatic to have Ray by her side and the feeling was clearly mutual.

Ray gifted her an expensive bracelet and Nicola and Jimmy arrived to play charades. Ray had clearly never played it before and had no idea of the rules. It was touching and sweet - and oh so awful because he is not a nice guy.

Vanessa wanted to blow Charity's secret this Christmas Day - but John got there first

Vanessa arrived at Charity's for Christmas clearly unhappy to be there and downed her drink.

Things soon got pretty raucous as everyone drunk more and more. A very inebriated Vanessa wanted to play truth or dare. Then she suggested never have I ever. Charity knew she was on borrowed time as she steered Vanessa out for some fresh air.

Vanessa told Charity she had to come clean, but Charity was adamant Sarah wants the baby. And who was listening? Only John Sugden - he really does get everywhere, doesn't he?

He wrote a note to Mack revealing the truth. So is this how the baby secret will come out?

Kim made amends

Kim was drinking alone looking at pictures of Will. Lydia turned up again and walked in despite Kim not answering the door. She apologised for overreacting. And it seemed Kim was starting to soften slightly. She then broke down as Lydia gave her a hug.

Kim went to visit Will's grave, as did Dawn and Joe and they all finally made up. Kim suggested they move back in.

Kim, Dawn and Joe then went to the Dingles' for Christmas lunch! Kim gave Lydia and Sam their jobs back. They even made Kim drink from the welly - and she did!

Kim then decided Lydia would still inherit Home Farm. Aw, what a lovely Christmas Day!

Also in Emmerdale this Christmas Day

Jacob was still sulking over Kerry and Pollard hijacking their wedding day. Jacob would not let it go and raged at Pollard as he tried to get in the festive spirit.

Kerry and Pollard departed for the Dingles' where they enjoyed festive lunch - and lots of questions - with Kyle and the family.

Claudette and Jimmy bonded over lost family at the cemetery. Cain also went to visit Nate's grave. Cain then gifted Kyle a car to do up together.

Dylan was home from hospital and Mandy and Paddy brought him to Rhona and Marlon. Paddy was upset over missing Bear.

But things for Bear were pretty grim as Christmas at the farm was far from festive. None of them even knew if it was Christmas Day or not.

Back at Marlon's April was under pressure from Celia over the move. She called Celia and told them she would go if they left her family alone.
