Former EastEnders actor Chris Coghill is joining the cast of Emmerdale as mysterious newcomer Kev, and fans are very excited to see him on screen. But they have one condition behind their joy and have issued a plea to show bosses over Kev.

Chris, best-known to soap fans as evil Tony King in EastEnders, will be on screen from late September and has already started filming. So has viewers’ appeal come too late?

Chris Coghill to play Kev in Emmerdale

It was announced on Thursday July 24 that Chris would be arriving in Emmerdale in the autumn.

Kev will first be seen looking for directions. But of course there is more to it. So who is he actually looking for? And why is he in the village now?

Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw said: “We are delighted that someone of Chris’ calibre has joined our cast. I think the viewers will be intrigued to see how the character of Kev will cause shockwaves this autumn.

“Kev has a strong connection to one of our characters and it’s safe to say his arrival is going to be a massive surprise that will have major repercussions for some of our villagers.”

Chris added: “I am really happy to be joining the cast of Emmerdale.

“Kev is definitely going to shake things up a bit and I’m looking forward to getting cracking!”

Fans react

The news has impressed fans, who remember him well as EastEnders paedophile Tony King who groomed and abused Whitney Dean when she was just 12 years old.

“Brilliant actor,” shared one on social media. Another added: “He’s a top actor, looking forward to this.” These were followed with: “Great casting” and “fantastic actor, well done Emmerdale”.

However, despite the joy, many are approaching the announcement with caution.

Plea issued over Emmerdale newcomer played by Chris Coghill

Kev comes hot on the heels of bad-boy drug dealer Ray and while we’re still suffering through the never ending John Sugden plot. Fans really don’t want another bad guy!

“Great actor but please not another sinister character in the same ilk as many others. It’s getting tiresome let him be a goody!” begged one on Instagram.

Another sighed: “He’s gonna be a baddie obvs, can’t we have a nice newcomer for once? Seems Emmerdale writers are concentrating on more potential nasty storylines. Shame for such a beautiful rural village.”

“Great yet another male character who’s got a sinister past, what’s happened to just introducing a regular character with no dark secrets for once. It’s getting a bit boring now for a small village it attracts a lot of dodgy people,” agreed one more.

Although it hasn’t been explicitly revealed that Kev is a villain, the term ‘myterious’ doesn’t bode well, does it?

But maybe there’s hope yet! Maybe he won’t be all that bad…
