A format-breaking Emmerdale episode for Cain Dingle

The episode begins with Cain narrating over the top of sunrise. It quickly becomes clear the way the episode is shot it different.

Only Cain is in focus. The other characters who appear are blurred and although we can hear them talking, it feels like background noise.

What we can hear throughout is Cain narrating how he feels about each thing that happens. Firstly, talking to Moira and then in his consultant appointment.

Cain is given the devastating news he has prostate cancer that is localised to the prostate gland, however it is an aggressive case. It has a high chance of growing and spreading if left untreated. He is told he needs a radical prostatectomy.

Cain’s brain tells him he doesn’t have time to have this surgery. He is then overwhelmed by the idea of incontinence and erectile dysfunction.

Cain is convinced cancer is going to kill him.

Back in the village, he snaps at everyone he sees and heads to Zak’s grave. Sarah follows him there and Cain finally admits what is going on.

The episode ends without music over the credits, just the sound of the wind blowing through the trees.
