A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 will be released far sooner than you think

Season 2 is already filming and it shouldn't take as long as House of the Dragon

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 has already been confirmed, and fans may not need to wait as long as they’ve dreaded.

Many moons ago, all we knew about Ser Duncan the Tall was that he had four pages to himself in the Book of Brothers. “He must have been quite the man,” Joffrey said.

After the first series of the Game of Thrones spin-off, we know that’s absolutely true.

It may be even better than House of the Dragon – and, fortunately, it looks like it won’t take as long between seasons.

When is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 out?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 will be released sometime in 2027. An exact release date hasn’t been confirmed, so it’s unclear if it’ll air in January 2027 or later in the year.

Let’s look at the first season’s timeline. It started filming in June 2024 (in Belfast), before wrapping in September. That’s a three-month production, and it took another 16 months until it premiered on Sky and HBO.

Production on the second season began in December last year. So, if it wraps in March, that’d put its release date somewhere around September next year.

There are two things worth remembering. Firstly, HBO chief Casey Bloys has confirmed that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be released annually. That would suggest season 2 will air closer to January, but that remains to be seen.

Secondly, showrunner Ira Parker told THR that the second season will be a tougher shoot, which could affect how long it takes to film.

Who will be in the cast?

Peter Claffey will reprise his role as Ser Duncan the Tall, with Dexter Sol Ansell also returning as his squire, Egg.

Don’t expect Claffey or Ansell to go anywhere. If Parker gets his way, they’ll stay in their roles through the show’s entire run – which could last as long as 30 years.

“I would do 12 of these. I would do four now, then four more 10 years from now, and then four more 10 years after that — take them all the way through their lives and just like [Boyhood],” he teased.

Whether or not that happens, remains to be seen.

Other stars have joined the season 2 cast. Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody, Sing Street) has reportedly been tapped to play Rohanne Webber, also known as the Red Widow, the head of House Webber during King Aerys I’s reign.

Paul Chahidi (The Night Manager), Kwaku Mills (Extraordinary) Steven Hartley (Happy Valley), Mimi Joffroy (The Devil’s Hour), and Craig Parkinson (Line of Duty) are also said to have been cast.

Existing characters, like Daniel Ings’ Lyonel Baratheon, may not return. It just depends on how much the series strays from the source material.

What will happen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 will likely follow Dunk and Egg in the Reach – specifically, in Standfast.

The second season is set to adapt The Sword Sword, George R.R. Martin’s novella that follows The Hedge Knight.

“It’ll still be six episodes. I think the scope will be same, maybe even smaller,” Parker said.

“The budget has stayed the same, but everything is more expensive due to inflation. Plus, book two takes place in a drought, so we can’t shoot exteriors in Belfast.

“We have to go to a sunny location with no water, which costs money — that’s a major expense that we did not have in season one. I’m having a lot of fun on season 2. It’s going to be a different season, and, I hope, for the better.”

Martin has outlined 12 other Dunk and Egg stories, so there could be some differences. However, unlike with House of the Dragon, Martin is heavily involved and has highly praised A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Are there any other Game of Thrones series coming out?

House of the Dragon season 3 will be released in mid-2026, likely around summer.

Loni Peristere, one of the new season’s directors, described the third season as “maybe the most epic season of television ever made”.

“It’s coming up sooner than we think, but not soon enough. We’re really getting close,” he also teased.

A spin-off following Aegon’s conquest of Westeros is also in development. It hasn’t been confirmed if it’ll be a show or a movie.

10,000 Ships, a live-action series set a millennium before Game of Thrones, is still in the works. Genndy Tartakovsky (Clone Wars, Samurai Jack) is also attached to an animated Sea Snake project.
