Call the Midwife fans have enjoyed watching all the Nonnatus House drama unfold on TV for the last 15 years. Now, our Poplar favourites are heading to cinema theatres with a film!

Producers announced in May 2025 that we would be getting two spin-offs from the world of Call the Midwife after series 15. First to arrive will be a prequel to the much-loved series. This will see some of our favourite current characters as their younger selves as they battle babies and the Blitz during WWII.

The second spin-off will be a Call the Midwife movie. While the prequel will take us back to Poplar in 1939, the movie will pick up where series 15 finishes in 1972.

Show bosses have announced that the Call the Midwife film will take place overseas. It will also feature iconic characters from the existing TV show.

Here is everything you need to know about the Call the Midwife film…

Call the Midwife movie filming news

Show runner Heidi Thomas and executive producers Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank, the all-female team behind the current TV show, will write and create the film.

Filming for the movie will get underway later in 2026.

Heidi says: “As the classic Call the Midwife series moves further into the 1970s, it also seems the perfect time for our much-loved regulars to take a short break from Poplar and test themselves in an unfamiliar landscape.

“The rise in hospital births and changes in the NHS have clipped their wings, and this is their chance to take flight and work out what really matters.”

When is the Call the Midwife film coming?

Heidi says: “The film is already in pre-production, but filming won’t start until later in 2026.” This means it is unlikely that we will see it in cinemas until 2027 at the earliest.

Before the film arrives, we will have a Call the Midwife prequel to enjoy, with Heidi adding: “We are going to make the prequel next.

“Viewers will watch the prequel set in 1939 first, followed by the film set in 1972 and starring the current cast. Series 16 will then take place in 1973.”

Where will they set the movie?

Bosses have confirmed that they will likely be set the Call the Midwife film in Australia.

Series creator, Heidi Thomas, said: “Australia is likely, I can say that. But there are a number of places in Australia that it could be, all of which would be very different.

“Filming the Christmas episodes abroad was a dry run for the movie. We learned how to work in high temperatures for one!”

The 2025 Christmas specials saw some of the Nonnatus House team head to Hong Kong. Meanwhile, the rest of our Poplar favourites remained in London. Producers have not yet confirmed whether the movie will follow the same format or if the entire film will be set in Australia.
