Call the Midwife series 14 recap: From Cyril's new romance after Lucille heartbreak to Trixie's marriage trouble
The last series of Call the Midwife covered everything from romance to tragic deaths...
Call the Midwife is finally heading back to our screens with a new series. But, before we return to 1970s Poplar to be reunited with our Nonnatus House favourites, let’s remind ourselves what happened at the end of series 14.
Fans of the much-loved period drama will know that, alongside expectant mums and dramatic births, Call the Midwife also covers important historical moments and taboo subjects. Not to mention the ups and downs of all our favourite characters from the show.
The last series saw romance blossom for Rosalind, while a new nun arrived at Nonnatus House. We also said a sad farewell to Nancy – but how did she leave, and why was her exit so dramatic?
Here is everything you need a refresher on with our Call the Midwife series 14 recap…
***Warning: spoilers for Call the Midwife series 14 ahead***

Call the Midwife series 14 recap: What happened?
The series opened in March 1940, and the midwives of Poplar faced everything from teenage pregnancy and abortion to rising rates of gonorrhoea and an increase in measles cases.
Throughout series 14, the nuns faced drama as they fought to get the council to renew their contract at Nonnatus House.
Sister Hilda told Sister Julienne that Poplar wasn’t the only place that had found its funding dwindling. It was happening at branches all over the country. Sister Hilda was convinced that they would all end up going abroad to become missionaries, and, judging by the trip to Hong Kong in the 2025 Christmas special, she isn’t far off the truth.
Joyce also found herself facing the disciplinary board after a racist patient made a formal complaint about her. Thankfully, Joyce won the case and was able to go back to work.
Cyril also had a big storyline running throughout the series, which saw him head to Jamaica to see his wife, Lucille. However, he came home without her and announced their marriage was over for good.
But things only got worse for Cyril when his beloved cat, Nigel, died and Rosalind became gravely ill from Weill’s disease. Seeing her so unwell made Cyril realise his true feelings for the midwife and their friendship blossomed into romance.
Doctor Turner and Shelagh also officially adopted May, giving the family the happy-ever-after they deserved.

What happened at the end of the last series of Call the Midwife? Has Nancy left?
At the very end of series 14, we saw Nancy tie the knot with Roger. However, their big day ended up being more eventful than they could ever have anticipated when Nancy went into labour. She ended up giving birth in the back of an ambulance with Nurse Crane on hand to help.
This is the last we will see of Nancy, Roger and Collette, however. Megan Cusack, who plays the midwife, has confirmed that she has left the show after four years, and her character’s dramatic wedding and labour episode was her last.
Cyril and Rosalind also got their happy ever after when they shared their first kiss. The attraction between them had been growing throughout the series, and they ended the series by attending Nancy’s wedding together.
The final episode of the series also saw newcomer Sister Catherine say her vows to God. She was thrilled to officially be welcomed into the Order after facing backlash from her family, who gave her their blessing in the end.

Did Trixie leave Call the Midwife?
No, thankfully, Trixie (played by Helen George) is staying put in Poplar for the foreseeable.
Ever since Trixie’s husband, Matthew Aylward, moved to New York for work in series 13, Trixie’s future on the show has been in doubt. Although the character, played by Helen George, originally went with Matthew and his son Jonty to America, she moved back in series 14, much to the relief of fans.
Since then, Trixie has been splitting her time between Poplar and New York. But by the end of the last series, it seemed that living her life on both sides of the ocean was taking its toll on the midwife.
During the final episode, Trixie was upset that she would have to miss Nancy’s wedding due to the fact that she had to return to America to be a bridesmaid for Matthew’s business partner in New York. Joyce then commented by saying, “That’s what comes from living on two sides of the ocean. You can’t be everywhere at once.”
Could this be a hint that change is coming for Trixie in series 15?

What will happen in series 15?
Call the Midwife series 15 will see a shift in life at Nonnatus House as the series heads into 1971.
With ‘modern’ ways of thinking threatening the nuns’ way of living, everyone is worried about what the future may hold.
The 2025 Christmas specials saw senior members of the Nonnatus House staff go abroad on a mercy mission for the first time. While in Hong Kong, Sister Julienne found herself excited about the Order’s future for the first time in years.
After years of battling change, the nuns decided to embrace it. This is a theme that will continue throughout series 15. The official BBC synopsis for series 15 says: “The new series kicks off in 1971 with several of the ladies embracing Women’s Lib and burning their bras outside Nonnatus House.
“As the year unfolds, we see the team handle cases including premature birth, placenta previa, kidney cancer, tuberculosis and slavery.”

Questions we need answering in the new series
Most importantly, will Cyril and Rosalind get the happy ever after they deserve? The fan favourites both deserve some light-hearted storylines after the drama of series 14. Will the writers let them enjoy their new romance, or could there be more trouble on the cards?
Trixie has also found herself at a bit of a crossroads and is likely to have to make some big decisions in series 15. Will she move to New York permanently to be with Matthew and Jonty? Or will she decide that her heart belongs in Poplar, marking the end of her marriage?
With the much-loved series heading further into the 70s, the future of Nonnatus House is under threat. Will they survive one more year of uncertainty? Or will series 15 see the beginning of the end for our much-loved nuns?
