Call the Midwife fans will need to be well stocked up this weekend, with tissues and a good old fashioned dose of stoicism, as series 15 comes to an end with highs – including Rosalind and Cyril’s wedding – and crushing lows.

If you’re a drinker, make sure you have something strong to hand. Episode 8 of the series is going to be an emotional hour, with the departure of one fan favourite, and another sad farewell.

You’ll find no spoilers here, but we can reveal the first pictures of the season finale. These include images of Rosalind’s beautiful wedding dress as they tie the knot surrounded by friends and family.

Here’s a sneak peak of Call the Midwife series 15 episode 8.

The wedding of Cyril and Rosalind in Call the Midwife

The final episode of Call the Midwife series 15 is more emotional than usual. And that is saying something! Although the BBC show has teased a devastating death, viewers will also be able to celebrate Cyril and Rosalind’s wedding.

Fans of the show will know that their relationship has had its challenges. Not least Cyril’s divorce from Lucille, and the racist abuse they have received about their inter-racial romance.

Now expecting their first child together, the pair tie the knot in joyous scenes (Sunday, March 08, 2026). New pictures show Rosalind in an understated white dress with floral detail, lace sleeves, with matching lace veil. Oh, and a huge smile.

Looking dapper in a mid-blue suit, Cyril looks equally happy surrounded by family and friends. Among the crowd throwing confetti at the loved-up pair are Mrs Wallace, Reggie Jackson, Geoffrey Franklin, Violet Buckle, Dr Patrick Turner, Millicent Higgins, Shelagh Turner, Trixie Franklin, Harry Chopra, and Joyce Highland.

What happens in the season 15 finale?

A synopsis for the final episode tells us: “It is mid-November and winter is nigh. Cyril and Rosalind sit together, quietly exchanging smiles as they open two small boxes containing their wedding rings. The pair subsequently prepare for their nuptials… Poplar is transformed for the wedding, and confetti rains when the newlyweds descend the stairs, surrounded by friends and family.”

Meanwhile, Miss Higgins storms into Dr Turner’s office with news that the council wants all its equipment returned before the maternity home closes. But he refuses… After all, the incubator was purchased through funds raised by the community and the beds will stay until the last mother leaves.

In other scenes, Geoffrey and Sister Veronica work together on the wedding cake. She confides that she feels exiled — not currently a nun, but not fully part of the world either. Where does this leave her in the Call the Midwife season finale? Pictures show her appearing to say a teary goodbye to Geoffrey in emotional scenes.

Does Sister Monica Joan die?

At Nonnatus House, Sister Monica Joan has ceased taking her medicine. She demands that Nurse Crane summon an undertaker and bring her a pomegranate. Nurse Crane is alarmed but indulges her with fond respect.

Bernie Mullucks subsequently wheels Sister Monica Joan through Poplar Market, where stallholders greet her warmly, remembering the babies she delivered decades ago. She delights in their generosity, recalling how the market and its
people have endured through war and hardship. Her journey ends in St Anne’s Church, where she asks that her Requiem be held.

In the latest episodes of Call the Midwife series 15, the health of Sister Monica Joan has declined. Dr Turner diagnosed her with chronic kidney failure, which can be fatal if left untreated.

Sadly for fans, the death of Sister Monica Joan looks very likely. Series 15 seems to have been slowly building towards her sad departure. Although, we shouldn’t be sad. As a woman of God, she believe she will be going to a better place.

The seeds have been sown for Sister Monica to die of her kidney disease. Fans will have to brace themselves for what looks to be an immensely emotional finale.

Is Call the Midwife ending? Is this the last ever episode?

Fans of the show know that Call the Midwife is taking a break after series 15 for a prequel series and a movie. But the BBC has confirmed the show WILL return for a 16th series. But probably not until 2028.

We do know that a younger version of Judy Parfitt’s Sister Monica Joan will be the focus of the upcoming prequel. Series creator Heidi Thomas confirmed the three lead characters would also follow the younger versions of Sisters Julienne and Evangelina, played by Jenny Agutter and Pam Ferris in the original show. Younger actresses, as yet unnamed, will be playing the characters.
