Celebrity Hunted stars Amy Dowden and Carlos Gu have admitted their friendship was seriously tested during the show.

The Strictly Come Dancing dancers, who have also teamed up away from the ballroom on Celebrity Gogglebox, are one of the pairs taking part in the new Channel 4 series in aid of Stand Up to Cancer. But swapping sequins for life on the run proved far from glamorous.

Speaking to Digital Spy ahead of the show’s return, Amy explained that she had wanted to sign up for a long time because the cause is so close to her heart following her cancer journey. Carlos, however, appeared to need a little more convincing at first.

Amy said she thought Carlos was “a bit wary to begin with”, before joking that he “wanted to kill me actually after day one”. Carlos replied: “I was like, ‘What’s she done to me’,” but said he knew how much Amy wanted to take part and wanted to support her.

He also said family members had suffered from cancer and had not survived, making the cause meaningful for him too.

While the pair went into the show as close friends, they said the pressure of being hunted changed their dynamic.

Amy told Digital Spy: “We started off as very close friends… But we finished Hunted as family. It brought us so much closer together. We fight, we make each other cry – you know, we’ve shared so much together.”

Carlos said their friendship was “really” challenged during the show, but added that they “survived”. And when asked about disagreements, he did not pretend it was plain sailing.

“All the time! Honestly. The amount of arguments we had doing the show is relentless,” he said.

The carrot cake argument

One row was over carrot cake, not exactly the kind of drama the Strictly dancefloor usually serves up.

Amy said the biggest argument came when Carlos wanted to go to a shop to buy carrot cake, while she worried they could be spotted and caught on CCTV.

She explained that the physical and emotional toll of the format made everything feel bigger. With poor sleep, not enough food and rising stress, Amy said they became “hangry, tired, emotional” and ended up snapping at each other.

Even so, both insisted there were highlights in among the tension. Amy noted that the show is supposed to be difficult because it is for Stand Up to Cancer, while Carlos said he only fully understood how hard it would be once they were in it.

Who else is on Celebrity Hunted?

The new run also features Love Island stars Chris Taylor and Toby Aromolaran. Brian Conley is also taking part with his daughter Lucy Conley.

Celebrity Hunted returns Monday August 3 at 9pm on Channel 4.
