The Good Ship Murder: Channel 5 confirms series 4 and Catherine Tyldesley's final episode as First Officer Kate Woods

The new series will welcome some "new faces"

The Good Ship Murder series 4 will once again feature Catherine Tyldesley as First Officer Kate Woods – but only briefly, Channel 5 has confirmed.

Series 3 concluded in February with the shocking death of a regular cast member, as well as the hint of change in the sea air.

Of course, fans of the cosy crime drama knew that Kate Woods’ fate was uncertain. This is because the actress who plays her has returned to Coronation Street for good. She returned to the cobbles last year as Eva Price.

Now, the broadcaster has revealed the fate of Catherine Tyldesley’s character First Officer Kate Woods. And it’ll be a bitter blow for her onscreen romantic interest Jack Grayling, played by Shayne Ward. Here’s everything we know so far about The Good Ship Murder series 4.

The Good Ship Murder will return for a series 4

Channel 5 has now officially confirmed that The Good Ship Murder will return for a series 4. This follows the success of series 3 earlier this year.

An announcement from the broadcaster said: “The new series promises more sun-soaked destinations, spectacular show tunes and gripping mysteries on the high seas.”

Although they have not yet divulged much about the upcoming series, they have teased a few tantalising details – not least about the future of Catherine Tyldesley’s First Officer Kate Woods.

Greg Barnett, Commissioning Editor of Channel 5, said: “We are thrilled to be bringing The Good Ship Murder back for a fourth series. Audiences have truly embraced the show’s unique combination of mystery, music and escapism. And we are excited to continue Jack’s journey with even more surprises and new faces in store.”

What’s the plot?

Shayne Ward will reprise his role as cabaret singer turned detective Jack Grayling “as he embarks on a brand new voyage packed with intrigue and danger”. The synopsis adds: “Series 4 sees Jack navigating new personal and professional waters as high stakes mysteries unfold against the backdrop of stunning Mediterranean locations and glamorous cruise ship life.”

However, his partner in crime – and love – won’t he continuing the journey with him.

Channel 5 tells us: “The new series will open with Catherine Tyldesley returning as First Officer Kate Woods for a special appearance in episode one, marking Kate’s final chapter on board.

“Her departure sets the stage for an exciting new era for Jack, as he navigates fresh challenges, new alliances and unexpected twists.”

Whether Kate and Jack split up for pastures new, or continue a long-distance relationship remains to be seen. But we suspect a new love interest for Jack will pop up at some point in the future.

Who is in the cast of The Good Ship Murder series 4?

While former Corrie star Shayne Ward will return as Jack Grayling, we know that Catherine will only appear in one episode. Sadly, we also know that Geoffrey Breton will not be back as Staff Captain Piers de Vreese after his shocking fate in series 3. It is unlikely that James Barriscale will return as Captain Richard Marlowe, either, following the character’s dementia diagnosis.

However, we know that the new series will introduce “a wave of guest stars and new characters” as the ship sets sail once more. We’re told series 4 “signals the beginning of a bold new adventure for the much-loved crime drama”.

Andy Morgan, Executive Producer, added: “As we set sail on series 4, we’re welcoming a host of wonderful new faces that audiences are going to love. Together they’ll join our hero Jack for more adventures and plenty of show-stopping tunes,  across the high seas. It’s a bittersweet moment as we bid a fond farewell to a beloved character and friend, but we’re very excited about the next voyage for The Good Ship Murder.”

How many episodes will it be? When’s the start date?

The Good Ship Murder series 4 will be eight episodes of 60 minutes each.

We are hoping that, like precious years, it will kick off with a Christmas special at the end of his year – likely when we’ll say goodbye to Catherine Tyldesley’s First Officer Kate Woods.

Watch this space for more details when we get them.
