Celebrity Traitors: Alan Carr was always my winner - even though the odds were on Stephen Fry to triumph

Alan's secret weapon on the show was his famously flappy demeanour

The Celebrity Traitors kicked off just a few short weeks ago and the odds were on Stephen Fry to triumph – but my money was always on Alan Carr to win.

TV’s best-loved Chatty Man had me howling from day one, especially when he burst out laughing when suggesting himself as a Traitor.

He handled the game like a total pro, finally declaring tonight: “I have and have always been… a Traitor!”

Alan now walks away with £87,500 for his charity; Neuroblastoma UK. And he burst into tears after revealing to Nick Mohammed and David Ogulosa his true identity. The pair were stunned, having just agreed to end the game.

Here is why I always knew Alan was going to win…

From Day one, while the other celebs in the 19-strong line-up were all busy air kissing each other and shaking hands (let’s not even mention Nick fan-girling over Celia Imrie by helping her look for her shield before his own), Alan soon showed a different side.

Sitting down with Traitors hostess with the mostess, Claudia Winkleman, Alan told her he wanted to be a Traitor. Even Claudia looked shocked, reminding him: “You will have to stab people in the back.”

Staring her square in the eye and without hesitation, Alan said: “They’d do it to me. They’re showbiz people. I’d do it to them. You know what celebrities are like; they’re two-faced.”

Celebrity Traitors odds

Even before The Celebrity Traitors had aired on BBC One, booking agents were already sharing their odds on the winner. Stephen Fry was leading the way in Casino Bets’ stakes, with odds of 4/1 to deceive and bluff his way to victory.

Sir Stephen is a man of many things; a broadcaster, comedian, writer, actor and brainbox. But was he the champion of The Celebrity Traitors 2025? No, he absolutely wasn’t.

At first, it appeared Stephen stood a good chance. He made it clear to social media star, Niko Omilana, that he knew exactly who he is. “You’re famous for barging into places and pretending to be things you aren’t. I have a sticky memory,” Stephen quietly told – if not sinisterly warned – him.

But when speaking to Claudia in private, Stephen immediately backed off from any murderous and sinister game playing. He told her: “I’d like to be a Faithful. I’d rather be on the side of the angels anyway in life, who wouldn’t? I like to think I’ve got a good skill set to be a Faithful.”

Claudia honoured Stephen’s request and didn’t pick him as one of the Traitors. She did, however, tap Alan on the shoulder, along with chat show host Jonathan Ross and singer Cat Burns.

Alan Carr’s secret weapon

When it came to the odds. Alan was fifth in line to win the show, at 7/1. He sat behind Ted Lasso actor Nick (9/2), Nick’s favourite leading lady, Celia Imrie (5/1) and sports broadcaster Clare Balding (6/1). But what people assumed would be Alan’s downfall was actually his secret weapon. His flappy nature took him all the way.

When handed his cloak by Claudia, Alan went off to meet his fellow Traitors. He admitted beforehand: “When I see them, I think I’m either going to scream or cry. My thing was to go under the radar and I think I’ve pole-vaulted over it!”

He also told the cameras he has a “nervous disposition”, adding “this whole game plays on your nerves”. But this is where he triumphed.

The Traitors were told their first murder would be in plain sight. They had to find a “deadly black lily” in the castle, rub their hand on its “poisonous petals” and then touch the person they want killed on the face. The murder would be slow and not immediate.

Given Alan’s famously over-friendly demeanour, Jonathan and Cat picked him to do the face touching. He immediately started to sweat and talk too loudly about the mission while mixing boozy drinks with Cat in the bar. But there was so much camp-ness, laughter, japes and pacing around coming from the Chatty Man that no one suspected a thing.

Alan loudly declared he was off to make a brew instead of a cocktail and strode off to the kitchen. But did rugby star Joe Marler seem suspicious of him when he bowled in? Nope. He was giving Cat – who looked incredibly on edge as she slowly followed behind – the side eye.

In a camera confessional, Cat said she felt Alan was too nervous and feared he wouldn’t be able to carry out the murder. But she needed to check herself first…

‘Trump card’

Alan killed off his good friend Paloma without a bat of an eyelid from anyone. And I’m not sure she has even forgiven him yet – or ever will. He continued to bump off the celebs left right and centre, before finding himself in the final five.

Joe might have rumbled him, but it wasn’t enough. Alan has won – and even his fellow Traitor, Jonathan Ross won’t be surprised.

Let’s not forget what Jonathan said when he saw Alan behind the third cloak right back at the start. He described him as the Traitors’ “trump card” – and I agree. Barely anyone suspected the happy-go-lucky comedian of murder. He was so bad he was so good. Excellent in fact!

Alan made this series for me. I had more fun watching him flap around that castle than anyone else in there.

I was right behind you the entire time, Alan. Well done!
