Ellis hailed for 'brilliant' series 2 opener but fans have one big complaint

Did you solve it?

Ellis is back, with Sharon D Clarke’s “brilliant” DCI tackling new cases in series 2. However, viewers have expressed one complaint.

The first two episodes saw Clarke’s detective and her right-hand man, DS Harper (Andrew Gower), investigating a mysterious death in Ashenham, a small (fictional) village in England.

As ever, the biggest question is… who did it? The victim – Peter (James Doran), a local businessman – was found dead at his home, and fingers were quickly pointed at the teenagers he was trying to help.

However, the second series’s first case concludes with a shocking reveal – that is, if you didn’t see it coming.

Ellis viewers quickly ‘guess killer’ in first series 2 case

Towards the end of episode 2, Joseph Ward (Joel Morris) is arrested for Peter’s murder. But it wasn’t him… it was DS Malcolm Oliver (John Hollingworth).

When Ellis and Harper return to the station to dig deeper into the case, they find DS Oliver attacking Joseph. As it turns out, DS Oliver knew Peter when he was a young boy, and they covered up one of their friends’ accidental deaths.

Peter threatened to reveal the truth to the press and the police, so DS Oliver killed him.

It’s a hell of a twist, but it didn’t catch everyone off guard.

“I really enjoyed it, did guess murderer about 5 minutes before reveal,” one user wrote online.

“I guessed the killer from the off on this one Channel 5… let’s hope they get trickier,” another commented.

Another viewer said they were “confused by all the characters” too. “Three of the important characters all looked very similar,” another added.

Fans say it’s ‘great to have Ellis back’

Even though some viewers may have predicted the twist, the first two episodes of Ellis series 2 have mostly been praised.

“Last night’s episode was absolutely brilliant, it’s so good to have Ellis back on our screens,” one wrote.

“Fantastic. Great to have Ellis back again. Sharon D Clarke is brilliant in this,” another commented.

“Love this programme, great to have Ellis back on our screens,” a third posted.

There has been another complaint, but it’s actually a compliment: fans wish there were more episodes!

“Brilliant 2 series. Looking forward to next week. Just wished there were more episodes,” one wrote, and Channel 5 replied: “Great to have it back, isn’t it. Hopefully more to come further down the line!”
