Ellis series 2: Episode 3 and 4 guest stars Stephen Tompkinson and Mark Eddy in the cast

It's a rare return to TV for the DCI Banks actor
Helen Fear

Ellis series 2 continues with episodes 3 and 4, entitled Elmsly Part 1 and 2, and Stephen Tompkinson makes a surprising guest appearance as DCI Chalmers in the cast.

The actor was easily one of the UK’s most bankable leading men in the noughties, but has made fewer and fewer TV appearances over the past 10 years.

So his fans will be thrilled to see Stephen Tompkinson back on our screens again. He appears in this week’s double bill of Ellis (Tuesday and Wednesday, March 17 and 18, 2026). And, rare bird, he’s playing a detective again!

He’s not the only famous face popping up in the Channel 5 crime drama either. Here’s who plays who in the cast of Ellis series 2 episodes 3 and 4 (aka Elmsly Part 1 and 2).

Mark Addy guest stars as Elliot Quinn

York-born actor Mark Addy joins the cast of Ellis series 2 as Elliot Quinn. This week, the village of Elmsly is shaken when university student Abi Marshall is found crushed beneath fallen scaffolding at a local construction firm. Elliot Quinn, the company owner, calls it a tragic accident, eager to shield his business from bad press – but Ellis is not convinced, especially as the camera that would have recorded the incident was switched off.

They soon discover that Abi had been conducting an investigation of her own, into the building business itself. Did this get her killed?

What TV and films has he been in?

Of course, TV fans will know 62-year-old Mark Addy for his often comedic roles on the small screen, in films, and in theatre. He famously played Dave in the 1992 film The Full Monty, a role he reprised in the 2023 spin-off TV series. Other notable film roles have included Friar Tuck in the Russell Crowe film Robin Hood, Roland in A Knight’s Tale, Mr Bakewell in the 2019 movie Downton Abbey, and Fred Flintstone in The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.

Barely out of drama school, Stephen first popped up in the 1987 sitcom All at Number 20, and popped up in several dramas until his big break in Clive Owen drama Chancer. And, of course, detective fans will know him as DCI Alan Banks in the ITV series that ran for six years, between 2010 and 2016. After the series ended, Stephen went on to play Davey McKenzie in The Split, and Brian in Trollied. And since then, he was only popped up occasionally on our screens.

Actually, Stephen is rather partial to the stage. In 2012, he made his musical theatre debut in London’s West End. He played the lead role of King Arthur in Monty Python’s Spamalot.

In 2018, he played Yvan in the UK tour of Art. That Christmas, he portrayed Ebenezer Scrooge in Jack Thorne‘s new adaptation of A Christmas Carol at The Old Vic, London. In 2019 he toured with a production of Willy Russell’s Educating Rita.
