Grantchester fans despair as ITV period drama gets 'sillier' every week: 'Run out of interesting plots'

Carry On Vicar?

Grantchester is coming to an end in 2027 with its final ever episodes but, as series 10 currently airs on ITV, some fans think it’s already past its sell-by date.

The period drama has been running since 2014. And it currently celebrating its 11th year on our screens. Last year, ITV confirmed the series would be ending in 2027 for good.

However, some previously loyal viewers of the show think it’s time. While some have switched off already. Here’s what Grantchester fans have been saying about the latest series currently going out on ITV.

Fans describe Grantchester series 10 as ‘terrible’

Series 10 of ITV period drama Grantchester started in January, having previously aired on PBS Masterpiece in the US. As usual it follows Robson Green’s character DI Geordie Keating as he investigates the wrongdoings in his village. And, once again, the local clergyman joins in for no good reason other than a) viewers love a double act b) the clergyman in question has to be incredibly good looking.

Since the show first began, Grantchester – a real historic village located just south of Cambridge – has welcomed three different vicars. All devastatingly handsome. Show me a church with a drop-dead-gorgeous vicar, and I’ll drop everything to drive there right now.

So, okay, it’s not a documentary! Grantchester is fiction, and aims to entertain. But some viewers believe the drama has become more cosy crime than crime drama.

Why has Grantchester turned into Carry On Vicar?

Grantchester series 10 has descended into “farce” according to some ITV fans.

One disgruntled viewer said on X: “I much preferred Grantchester when it was serious. It seems a bit silly now.”

Another agreed, adding: “Grantchester has become daft in this latest series. Run out of interesting plots.”

A third said: “Why has #Grantchester turned into Carry On Vicar?”

“This is getting more like a Whitehall farce by the second,” complained another, while yet another fed up viewer said: “I’m done with Grantchester. It should have finished after the last series.”

Others blasted the eight-part series for “pushing an agenda”.

One former fan typed: “Grantchester is a tick-all-the-boxes show now… It used to be slightly grittier, but it’s just faff now. Why would the local priest be present during interviews with suspects and going into crime scenes? Office romances, mild hints of racism that do not contribute to the plot.”

Another lamented: “Oh dear ITV. Grantchester was such a great series. Latest series/episodes are terrible. You are now too busy pushing all your messages down our throats you’ve lost what the series meant to the fans.”

A third added: “Sorry but the writing is awful for this series. The actors have been let down and tonight’s seemed more concerned with every DEI [Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion] issue possible rather than the actual story.”

‘Loving the humour’

The latest series tackles some serious subjects alongside the humour. These include Leonard’s descent into alcoholism, and the gender identity crisis of Geordie’s son.

And some fans are still fully on board.

One fan said: “There is a little part of me [that], every time the credits roll, that gets a bit emosh. Because I know it’s going to end, but it’s great to have it back on our screens! This is proper, sit with the family, wholehearted, comfort TV.”

Another said: “Loving the humour in Grantchester tonight.”

A third joked: “Half expecting Basil Fawlty to show up! Grantchester – God I love this show.”
