How to Get to Heaven from Belfast creator warns season 2 is 'completely down' to one condition or it won't happen

Lisa McGee says she'd 'love' to do season 2

How to Get to Heaven from Belfast appears to be a hit on Netflix – but it could take more than that to get season 2 made, according to the creator.

Netflix has a bad habit of cancelling shows after one season. Last year, it axed The Waterfront and Pulse, and Terminator Zero and The Abandons are among 2026’s early streaming casualties.

Will How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, the new comedy-mystery from Lisa McGee, the creator of Derry Girls, suffer the same fate?

Time will tell, but McGee wants to make a second season… as long as there’s enough demand for it.

Is How to Get to Heaven from Belfast season 2 happening?

How to Get to Heaven from Belfast season 2 has yet to be confirmed by Lisa McGee or Netflix.

One thing needs to happen for the show to get a second season renewal, and it’s really simple. People need to watch it.

It’s unclear how high its viewership will need to be, but keep an eye on the top 10 chart. If it drops out after a week, its chances will be much slimmer, but if it maintains its popularity, we could be in luck.

“I’ve left it open for a second series but it’s all completely down to how many people watch,” McGee told Deadline. “I’d love to do one.”

When would season 2 be released?

If How to Get to Heaven from Belfast season 2 gets confirmed, we won’t see it until 2027 at the absolute earliest. To avoid any disappointment, be prepared to wait until 2028.

McGee currently isn’t attached to any other projects. She teased the possibility of a comedy mockumentary to Deadline, but who or what it’d be about remains unclear.

Could it be that she’s waiting for Netflix to green-light season 2? Perhaps, so let’s keep our fingers crossed.

What would happen in How to Get to Heaven from Belfast season 2?

How to Get to Heaven from Belfast season 2 would hopefully address the finale’s big unanswered question: what was in the pink bag?

The final episode mostly tied up all the loose ends. Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara found Greta at Heaven’s Veil (aka Caille Neamh), where she explained her tragic past with Jodie and how she ended up ‘dead’ and on the run.

Booker, the chief enforcer of an organisation set up to help vulnerable women, had been ordered to kill Greta. Instead, she organised new identities for Greta and her family so they could flee and live in peace.

However, the episode ended on a surprising cliffhanger. We previously saw Greta with Conrad, a stranger who offered to give her a lift.

He stopped in the middle of the woods, stepped out of the car, and got back in with a jacket and a pink bag. He’s never seen again… until the end, when we see him left in his truck with a screwdriver in his neck.

Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara end up left with the bag, and we never find out what’s inside.

This would presumably be the set-up for season 2, and it’d allow McGee to lean on the first season’s characters – like Liam, the guard from Knockdara. Don’t expect to see Greta again, though.

Who’d be in the cast?

Roísín Gallagher (Saoirse), Sinéad Keenan (Robyn), and Caoilfhionn Dunne (Dara) would be expected to return to the How to Get to Heaven from Belfast cast.

This is all speculation, of course, but it seems unlikely that season 2 would go ahead without them.

The real question is, who else would come back? Darragh Hand’s Liam and Tom Basden’s Seb would slot in quite easily.

Depending on the direction of the story, we could also see Bronagh Gallagher’s Booker and Saoirse-Monica Jackson’s Feeney. In their final scene, Booker appeared to hint that she wanted to recruit the gals.
