Lazarus on Prime: Filming locations include stunning Manchester landmarks masquerading as London

Mancunians and Liverpudlians, keep your eyes peeled...

Lazarus on Prime Video puts the North West of England front and centre amidst the spectral chills, with some surprising filming locations.

Created by the king of mystery thrillers, Harlan Coben, this six-parter sees protagonist Joel Lazarus search for answers pertaining to his father’s suicide, viewers might not realise he’s actually in the North’s biggest cities, stitched together.

Here are all the key Lazarus filming locations.

Where was Lazarus filmed?

Prime Video series Lazarus began shooting back in February 2024.

Morecambe’s four-star Midland Hotel was used as the exterior for Joel’s psychiatric hospital place of work. Production also travelled to Manchester and Liverpool.

In Manchester, the bustling and colourful Chinatown doubled for London streets. King Street’s Edwardian Baroque architecture added grandeur on screen – most prominently via Hotel Gotham which stood in for the outside of Dr. Jonathan Lazarus’ office. Such is Hotel Gotham’s popular aesthetic, it was recently (and fittingly) captured on camera for next year’s DC film Clayface.

The Rochdale Canal, music venue The Peer Hat and George Leigh Street also played host to Lazarus’ production. As did The Langley Building on Hilton Street, Southern Cemetery (for funeral scenes) and Mayfield Park.

Harlan Coben series Lazarus: Northern architecture brought ‘scale’

Laboratory, library and office sets for Lazarus were constructed at Space Studios, 10 minutes outside of Manchester city centre. Bill Nighy compared his character’s office to something from a Batman film whilst promoting the series on This Morning.

The studio’s co-ordinator Leigh Rogers has said: “The sets for Lazarus have been some of my favourites. The attention to detail and skill used to create the haunting effects of the show is testament to the crew in the North West.”

Liverpool’s Stanley Dock, Sefton Park and Georgian Quarter were all selected as filming spots too.

Lazarus executive producer Nicola Shindler (of Quay Street Productions) told Screen Time that the North brought “scale” to the show.

“As a production company, we are based there so it makes sense financially and practically to film there and also we have great locations,” she said. “I think you see in Lazarus the scale of the buildings and the architecture filming between Manchester and Liverpool. We just managed to get a real sense of scale which isn’t always how the North West is put on screen. So to have that vision of [director] Wayne Yip opening up those locations, I think it looks huge.”

Wayne’s other Prime Video credits include episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Hunters, The Wheel of Time, and Fallout.

Lazarus series 2: Will it happen?

When it comes to a second series of Lazarus, the horrific ending doesn’t necessarily warrant further investigation.

Yes, Joel’s biological son Aidan appeared to murder Laura (inheriting the bloodlust of Dr. Lazarus). Jenna discovered her father’s incriminating tapes too, but by that stage the main thrust of the story had already wrapped up.

So what has Harlan said on the matter?

The bestselling author told Screen Time that Lazarus contains “a complete story”.

“[The team agreed] that we were not going to be that group that doesn’t answer all the questions. So you get all of the answers by the end of the show,” Harlan explained.

“Do we leave a door open? Yeah, perhaps. I don’t know about a season two. The only thing we’ve all agreed is if we don’t think a season two is going to be as good or better than season one, let’s just move on to our next story. If people watch it and demand it and we come up with an idea that we all love, yes, and if not, no. We’re not going to push it.”
