Robson Green teases tragedy for Geordie Keating in 'bittersweet' scenes from final day on set of Grantchester: 'The end of an era'

Robson Green has joked he’s “available for panto” as he shares scenes from the final ever day on the set of Grantchester as the popular series ends for good.
ITV confirmed earlier this year that Grantchester is coming to an end, with series 11 set to be the last ever.
The popular Robson Green detective drama has been running ever since 2014. But now we know that the 2027 series will be the last, “marking the end of a golden chapter for ITV drama”.
Naturally, the news saddened millions of Grantchester fans when it was announced. And new photos from the final day on set hint at something sinister happening to Robson Green’s character Geordie Keating…
‘Bittersweet isn’t the word’ as Grantchester cast and crew complete final series
Grantchester fans knew it was coming, but now Robson Green has shared scenes from the final ever day on the set of the detective drama.
Today (Tuesday, August 04, 2026), Robson shared a post by the US makers Masterpiece PBS. The post said: “‘Bittersweet’ isn’t a strong enough word. Listen in as the #GrantchesterPBS cast cast and crew discuss the experience of making this special series on their final day of filming.
“Every journey must come to an end… The final season of Grantchester has arrived. DI Geordie and Reverend Alphy join forces for their most personal journey yet, as they once again uncover the truth behind a series of mysterious crimes. As each case unravels so do the secrets that lie beneath the surface of village life, leading to life-changing decisions for those closest to them.”
The final season of Grantchester has recently aired in the US on Sundays at 9pm on Masterpiece PBS.

‘An end of an era’
Talking about filming the final scenes, director Rob Evans said: “This is the end of Grantchester. This is the end of the show. So to bring it home was very important to me. The affection I have for the show, for everyone involved in it, meant I was very keen to bring it home.”
Daisy Coulam, writer and executive producer, said: “There have been tears. And there will be more.”
Executive producer Emma Kingsman-Lloyd added: “The Grantchester villagers have been great. This series, Robson did a firework display to say thank you. But they’ve always been so generous to us.”
Star of the show Robson said: “I’ve done over 1,000 hours of television. Be it in documentaries, be it dramas, be it films for TV. This is like nothing else.”
He is seen talking to the cast and crew after the last shot, saying: “My goodness. The end of an era. And I always said if I was to leave this show, they would have to wheel me out on a trolley. This has been 11 years of absolute joy, and it is a gift. And it is a gift that has kept on giving for the last 11 years.
“Eleven years in this wonderful family, who care about this show, who love this show. We’ve been here since day one. Guys. it’s been wonderful and we’ve created memories over the past 11 years that we shall cherish. So thank you, and good night.”
What happens to Geordie Keating in the final series of Grantchester?
Of course, the pictures of Robson Green’s character Geordie Keating being wheeled off-screen in the final shot has not gone unnoticed. However, the final shot filmed isn’t always the final scene to be aired…
Does this mean his character is in danger in the final series? It certainly seems to suggest that. Of course, Masterpiece, ITV, and Robson are all keeping schtum. But it’s a very worrying detail to the final ever series.
Fans commenting on the reel said: “I can’t believe the show is ending! Even with the changes in the vicar, it always continued and was great. I don’t know what I’m gonna do without these characters in the show.”
Another added: “I’m so sad. Thank you for all of the wonderful years of getting to live in the Grantchester world.”
A third wrote: “I’m so, so sad that this show has ended. The characters felt like family. I will miss them.”
Those who have already watched in the US said they had “cried like a baby” at the scenes.
What happens in the final series of Grantchester?
Grantchester series 11 joins Geordie and Alphy in the heady Summer of ’63. Alphy is learning more about his past. He comes to realise that there is a whole other life he could have led, making him question who he is and what he believes in. He’s also continuing to get to know Meg, the Bishop’s daughter…
A synopsis continues: “Geordie, for once, is positively brimming with bonhomie! He’s learned to weather the storms of life and is enjoying a time of relative peace. Cathy’s happy now that CeCe’s Fashion Boutique is a success, and the kids are old enough to look after themselves!
“But then, out of the blue, the Chief Superintendent comes to Geordie with a beguiling offer. It could be a chance for Geordie to finally be in charge, but it could also mean an end of his crime solving days. And his crime solving partnership with Alphy… ”
Meanwhile, Leonard finds himself with time on his hands during a quiet period at the halfway house. He takes the opportunity to take stock of his own life and whether he’s doing enough with it. When one of Daniel’s neighbours becomes ill, Leonard is drawn into helping care for the neighbour’s son Raymond – and discovers a paternal side to himself he never knew he had.”
The synopsis concludes: “In Grantchester series 11 everyone will question the paths they are on, and some huge decisions will be made. This season will look at family, forgiveness, identity, and faith. Big changes are coming to Grantchester…”
When’s the start date? How can I watch it?
Grantchester series 11 is expected to air on ITV, STV, ITVX AND STV Player in 2027. It started filming in the UK in July 2025. Series 10 landed on our screens in January 2026.
The detective show typically starts in January, and runs for six or eight weeks, depending on the number of episodes. While most series are six instalments, series 6 and series 9 were both eight parts in total.
All previous series are currently available to watch on ITVX.
Why is Grantchester ending?
In July 2025, ITV confirmed that Grantchester series 11 will be the final series as it comes to an end after 11 years. Although they did not explain why.
Despite its continued success, ITV has made the decision to end the series. Just last year, Masterpiece executive producer Susanne Simpson said: “This is hands down one of our most popular series, and I know the fans will be thrilled to see it continue with the outstanding Robson Green and Rishi Nair back for more crime solving in series 10.”
Meanwhile, leading man Robson Green, who has played DI Geordie Keating since series 1 in 2014, has previously made it clear he had no plans to leave the show.
When asked if he ever gets tempted to leave the show, like co-stars James Norton and Tom Brittney, Robson made it clear he was happy to stay.
Robson, who is also executive producer of Grantchester, explained: “I never get itchy feet because I’m at a stage in my life where I want to work with people who make me genuinely happy, in front of the lens and behind it.
“I’m not chasing awards, I’m not chasing fame. I’m just being present in a very enjoyable and healthy environment, and that’s what Grantchester is. It’s one of the nicest jobs I have ever done in my career.”
In an interview with TVGuide.co.uk, he added: “I’m very blessed that I can do other stuff. I do documentaries and I do other dramas. Why would I want to leave? I never take one second of Grantchester for granted.”
