Silent Witness fans beg BBC One to make guest star a permanent character after dramatic series 29 ending
Maybe even a spin-off show?!
Silent Witness series 29 has come to a bittersweet ending after five weeks, and fans have – like every year – been left wanting more… But this time, they want more of one particular person.
The season finale (Tuesday, March 03, 2026), saw Nikki, Jack, Harriet and Kit get caught up in a very complex and dangerous case. The true criminal? Artificial Intelligence and people who use it for their own selfish and politically motivated interests.
As per every series that has come before (ever since it first started in 1996), there were some fans who loved the season finale. They will miss the Bowman Team until we next see them in 2027. And, of course, there were the haters, who ridiculed the series for its “preposterous” plots and “wooden acting”. (So why are you watching then?)
But it was one special guest that impressed the viewers so much, they have begged for the actor’s return…

‘Miserable copper’ DI Fred Casey was the ‘best part’ of Silent Witness series 29 ending
Silent Witness fans were quite taken with one of episode 9 and 10’s guest stars. Brampton-born Sean Gilder portrayed DI Fred Casey in Silent Witness’ Shame Part 1 and 2. And he very quickly made his mark.
Constantly devouring some food or other (and messily), Casey was an Oxford-based detective whose un-PC approach delivered some of the best lines of the series.
“Does anyone ever call you the hot doctor?” he asked Nikki Alexander. She coolly responded: “No one who is still alive.”

Misogynist, grubby, covered in crumbs, and subtle as a sledgehammer? We should have hated him. But, nope, he won the nation’s hearts. Well, there’s no accounting for taste!
After watching DI Fred Casey ‘help’ Nikki and the Bowman Team with the tricky case of a suspected suicide, fans begged BBC One to rebook him for series 30!

‘Bring DI Fred Casey back for series 30’
Fans were totally invested in DI Fred Casey.
One said on X: “The miserable copper should get his own spin off series. #SilentWitness.”
Another added: “Best part of this two parter was this guy [DI Fred Casey].”
A third wrote: “His whole attitude was on point. Then his little friendship with Kit was magic! #SilentWitness.”
“I think he could actually be good in his own series or a permanent member with #SilentWitness,” agreed another.
“A Casey and Brookes spin-off might be fun,” said another. “Failing that, DI Casey could lead his own show, something a bit Frost ish. #SilentWitness.”
One more said: “Please bring back Sean Gilder next series, he is such a great addition to the show.”
“Thank God for Sean Gilder. Make him a regular,” enthused another.
Well we think he was a hit!
Will he return in series 30 or beyond?
We hate to break it to you, but it’s rare for a detective to return in more than one series of Silent Witness. But it HAS happened.
Actress Zoe Telford returned as Chief Superintendent Jane De Freitas in 2025, 10 years after first playing her in 2015. Meanwhile, Nadine Marshall portrayed DI Sarah Torres in 2023 and 2024.
BBC One has not confirmed whether DI Fred Casey will return in future episodes of Silent Witness. Although we do know that the series is now filmed in Birmingham, and the character is based in Oxford. So we’d need another murder in the city for there to be another appearance!
