Stranger Things season 5 volume 2 left loads of unanswered questions – notably, why was Vecna so scared when he saw the cave?

One of Netflix’s best shows is weeks away from its highly anticipated finale, and it’s set to be an epic and emotional ending.

However, there is still a lot of stuff to sort out. For example, will Max make it back to the Rightside Up with Holly? Will Eleven help Kali escape Dr Kay’s imprisonment?

The Duffer Brothers have promised answers about Vecna, too – but we already know one of the big ones.

Why Vecna is scared of the cave in Stranger Things

When Holly finds Max in Vecna’s memories, she explains that she’s been hiding in the caves in the woods because it’s the only place she’s safe from him.

In a flashback, we see him standing at the entrance, teary-eyed and shuddering in fear.

“He was scared. More than scared, he was terrified. There’s something about this cave. This memory. He won’t come in,” Max says.

There’s no way to know what spooked him… unless you saw Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the franchise’s play that hit the stage in 2023.

Vecna was transported to Dimension X

It’s a prequel to the TV series, set in Hawkins in 1959. It features younger versions of major characters, like Hopper, Joyce, and Bob from season 2. However, it mostly follows Henry Creel, a troubled teen who eventually becomes Vecna.

No other spoilers, but the play touches on why Vecna refuses to go into the cave in volume 1.

In short, Henry wandered into the cave as a child, unaware that Dr Brenner was conducting an experiment to reopen the gate into Dimension X, an alternate world linked to the Upside Down – but they are not the same.

He was stuck there for 12 hours, and while we know he encountered the Mind Flayer, we don’t know anything else about what happened. However, he returned changed (and not just because he had powers).

As you should remember, the Mind Flayer is capable of inflicting nightmarish horror on its victims. Volume 2 could reveal the specifics of those 12 fateful hours, but we know that’s the source of Vecna’s fear.

Stranger Things season 5 volume 2 spoilers already confirmed

If you’ve been paying close attention to the Stranger Things press tour, there are key details about what to expect.

For example, the Duffer Brothers have confirmed that the show will address the truth behind not only the Mind Flayer, but the Upside Down entirely.

“We do every last remaining thing we wanted to do with the Demogorgons and Mind Flayer and Vecna and the Upside Down and Hawkins and these characters. This is a complete story. It’s done,” the creators told Variety.

It’s also been predicted that the final episodes will involve time travel in some way, and the season 5 synopsis mentioned “time itself unraveling”.
