Balvinder Sopal has revealed she seriously struggled with the Rumba routine on Strictly Come Dancing: so much so, she “sat in the corner and cried”.

The EastEnders star took to the dance floor last weekend with pro partner Julian Caillon. The pair performed a Rumba to Stay by Shakespears Sister.

However, rehearsing the dance didn’t go plain sailing for Balvinder who has now candidly admitted she “threw the towel in” at one point.

Strictly star Balvinder Sopal reveals behind-the-scenes upset

On Tuesday (November 4) Balvinder and Julian appeared on Strictly spin-off show It Takes Two, and the conversation soon turned to the topic of Balvinder’s dance last weekend.

The pair bagged a score of 28 from the judges, but ended up in the bottom-two. Fortunately for them, Ellie Goldstein and Vito Coppola were sent home.

It was the third time Balvinder and Julian had faced the dance off. Despite avoiding the bottom of the leaderboard, it clearly wasn’t enough for the public to back Balvinder.

On It Takes Two, Host Fleur East said: “You made Shirley quite emotional and the judges are noticing that you’re improving week on week. So how difficult is that that when the scores don’t reflect the improvement?”

Balvinder replied: “I’m trying to get my head around it because surely there’s a part of me that goes if you can see improvements that warrants a little bit of a better score than we got last week.

“So I don’t really know where the judges sit and what they are looking for. At this point I’m a little bit confused!”

I’d thrown the towel in

Nonetheless a defiant Balvinder added: “I’m just going to go out there week on week and just dance to my heart’s content because that’s all I’ve got control of. There’s nothing else I can do.”

The soap star then went on to reveal that she seriously struggled with the rumba when rehearsing it. She admitted: “Certainly with the rumba it was the hardest thing to learn.

“Literally on Tuesday I’d thrown in the towel in and went ‘I can’t do it’.” Balvinder then revealed: “I sat in a corner and cried. Jules is standing there and he went ‘when you’re ready bro’.”
