The Fortune on Channel 5: Viewers 'strapped in' for new thriller but convinced they've worked out the plot twist
Amanda was left a huge inheritance by a man she claimed she'd never met...
The Fortune arrived on Channel 5 last night after weeks of hype and promotion and it left viewers divided, with some already claiming to have guessed the plot twist already.
The four-part series, which continues tonight (Wednesday, June 03, 2026), saw cafe worker Amanda receive the sort of news most people would die for. And, in this case, someone had.
Entrepreneur and respected businessman Martin Worrall had taken his own life, leaving his son and wife devastated. And that was pretty much all he’d left them. They were horrified to learn that he had left his entire inheritance to someone they’d never heard of.
Martin changed his will shortly before he died by suicide, and he left every single penny to Amanda Blakefield. But she claimed she’d never met him, and was totally shocked to be the benefactor.
However, some viewers believe they have already figured out the upcoming The Fortune plot twist…

Why did Martin Worrall leave his inheritance to Amanda Blakefield?
On the whole, Channel 5 viewers admitted they were “strapped in” for the new thriller. Although some are convinced they’ve already worked out the plot twist.
The central mystery of the series asks ‘why on earth Martin would leave everything to a woman he’d never met’. And fans think they know why. Amanda, played by Eleanor Tomlinson, is his daughter.
One wrote on X: “Could she be a daughter? #TheFortune.”

Another said: “Calling it now. She’s his daughter. He never told his family about her. DNA tests to follow shortly.”
A third predicted: “Surely he has to be her dad in #TheFortune? The ages match up. Illegitimate child from an extra-marital affair?”
While Martin’s wife Fiona insisted Amanda wasn’t Martin’s daughter, how could she know?

Fans have their say about The Fortune plot twist
Some fans were happy to be taken for a ride, with one typing: “As I am a self-confessed glutton for punishment, I am strapped in for the latest Channel 5 drama! Praying for strength to see it through!”
Others weren’t so sure about the Hartlepool-based drama.
One baffled viewer questioned: “‘Did he leave a suicide note?’ Well that’s a hugely tactful thing to ask a grieving family. ‘Excuse me, did your loved one explain why they ended their life? Thank you for the inheritance money by the way.'”
Another said: “How to sort out an unexpected inheritance: (a) consult a solicitor, and get it sorted out; or: (b) throw away the solicitor’s letter and barge in uninvited to a grieving family.”
A third added: “I don’t like Amanda already. She should just get on with it and get the money anyway.”
“Wouldn’t they phone her and ask her into their office instead of just barging into her workplace?” asked another. While one more said: “Channel 5 either do bloody brilliant dramas or shockingly bad am/dram. The Fortune is tipping ever so slowly to the latter…. ludicrous.
Others called it a “dud”, with a “god awful script”. “Mrs Poldark the only thing saving this so far,” said one more.
