Waterloo Road has revealed the new series, which starts tonight, Tuesday, January 6, will feature a distressing storyline about child grooming.

The plot will focus on new football coach Anthony Walters (played by Happy Valley and Emmerdale actor Karl Davies), the estranged husband of Nicky Walters (Kym Marsh).

He will be seen sickeningly abusing his position of trust to exploit pupil Portia Weever. The makers announced the plot would unravel over two episodes in Waterloo Road series 17.

Steph Haydock hero of the hour?

Returning character Steph Haydock – played by Denise Welch – will also be central to the powerful plot.

Denise has explained: “Portia is always dealt with as kind of the naughty kid. The one thing about Steph is that she has always taken on board the kids who people give up on.

“[Steph] comes in and tries to find the person within Portia, and that’s very important to her.

“Steph always goes for the underdog and although it might be an unconventional way of teaching she usually gets through to them, and it’s a little bit like that with Portia.”

The show’s executive producer, Cameron Roach, revealed that the BBC sought advice from the NSPCC .

He said: “Waterloo Road has a strong tradition of highlighting difficult issues young people face. Portia, played by Maisey Robinson, has proven to be one of our most popular new characters, and our writing team felt she could portray a truth around this very difficult subject matter.

NSPCC support

“Working with the NSPCC and other experts in the field, we have been able to raise awareness of an important social issue, and demonstrate to young viewers that help, and support are always close at hand if needed.”

Plus, Helen Westerman, NSPCC Strategic Service Manager for Local Campaigns, added: “Child sexual abuse or exploitation can have lifelong effects on those who experience it, so it is vital that parents, carers and young people know how to identify when something might be wrong.

“Having topics like grooming explored sensitively in flagship shows like Waterloo Road helps share important information with viewers and signpost to essential resources, like the NSPCC Helpline and Childline services, which are available to offer support around the clock.”

What else is happening in the new series of Waterloo Road?

Thankfully, Waterloo Road’s new series isn’t just about grooming and has some lighter moments. Moreover, the BBC hints that new Deputy Darius (Jon Richardson) goes power crazy. And just how far will he go to hold onto that power?

Also, the pupils have to make sure they have their outfits in order for the school prom. Plus, there is love in the air and even a wedding in series 17.
