Waterloo Road star William Rush dies days before Christmas as mum Debbie pays tribute

Waterloo Road fans are mourning the loss of Josh Stevenson actor William Rush, who has sadly died at the age of 31.

William, best known for playing Josh in the BBC school drama, passed away on December 17, just eight days before Christmas. His death was confirmed in a heartfelt tribute shared by his family.

His mother, Coronation Street star Debbie Rush who plays Anna Windass, announced the tragic news online that Waterloo Road star William had died.

A photo shared online showed William smiling in a Manchester City football shirt, alongside a moving message paid tribute to his kindness and strength.

In the statement, his family said they were completely heartbroken and struggling to put their loss into words.

The family also revealed that William became an organ donor, describing it as his final, selfless act.

Debbie said William was their most ‘precious gift’

The Corrie star wrote online: “Our beautiful baby boy, William, passed away on 17th December. As a family, our hearts are completely broken, and there are no words that can truly capture the depth of our loss.

“Even in our darkest moment, William gave the most precious gift of all. Through being an organ donor, he has given hope and life to other families, thinking of others right to the very end. His kindness and love will forever be part of his legacy.

“We kindly ask that our privacy be respected as we navigate this unimaginable grief. William will always be loved, always missed, and forever in our hearts.”

Tributes and condolences have poured in for the family, including fellow actors.

Waterloo Road’s Katie McGlynn wrote to his family: “Debbie I am so sorry to you all. Will brought a smile to everyone’s face and was a very kind soul. Thinking of you & sending so much love to you all.”

And another co-star, Chelsee Healey, penned: “Oh Debbie my heart breaks for you all I’m so so sorry! Rest in peace Will.”

Whereas, Coronation Street icon Sally Dynevor said: “Oh Debbie I’m so shocked to hear this news. Sending you so much love. What a beautiful boy he was.”

Will’s career on TV

William Rush will be remembered by many viewers for his long-running role as Josh Stevenson on Waterloo Road.

He appeared in 70 episodes of the show between 2009 and 2013. William became a familiar and much-loved face during one of the drama’s most popular eras.

Josh’s storylines made William a standout with fans, and his performances helped cement the character as a key part of the series during his time at the school.

Away from Waterloo Road, William also appeared on The X Factor in 2016. He competed as a contestant before leaving during the Six Chair Challenge stage. He later made a brief appearance in Coronation Street in 2014.

Tributes have continued to pour in following the news of his death, with many remembering him for his warmth, talent and the impact he made both on and off screen.
