Princess Andre references dad Peter and Mel B’s romance
In the second episode of The Princess Diaries, which airs on ITV2 tonight (March 9), Princess is seen attending The Beauty Awards.
During a conversation with Gogglebox star Joe Baggs at the ceremony, she is asked by him whether she’s excited to meet Mel B.
“I’ve met her before,” Princess replies. “I think my dad used to date her!”
Speaking to the camera, Princess says: “I mean, true story. My dad and Mel B did date at one point.”
A picture of Peter and Mel in the back of a car is then shown.
“I mean, I wasn’t even born. It was way before my mum.”
When did Peter Andre and Mel B date?
Peter and Mel go way back. To the 1990s, in fact.
The Spice Girls star and singer Peter dated briefly in 1996. Mel was 21 years old at the time, whilst Peter was 23. Their romance was brief, lasting just nine months, before they split.
Their romance was very low-key, with Mel even keeping it a secret from her Spice Girls bandmates.
The star revealed they didn’t find out about it until Peter spilled in his book.
“They [the girls] didn’t know until years later when he wrote it in his autobiography,” she said in 2019. “They were like: ‘Are you kidding me?! Peter Andre was on tour with us?!’
“Back in the day, it was a thing – boy bands and girl bands were never to be seen with boyfriends or girlfriends. Which I can understand because you want to be appealing to your audience. Now it’s more acceptable, but back then it wasn’t.”
Why did Peter Andre and Mel B split?
Peter and Mel’s romance didn’t last long, with Mel breaking Peter’s heart, according to the Mysterious Girl singer.
Speaking on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories back in 2011, Peter opened up about his relationship with Mel, and it’s sad ending. I really liked Mel but she broke my heart. She treated me like I’d treated other women in the past, and she made me grow up,” he said.
What have Peter Andre and Mel B said about each other since the split?
Although their relationship came to a sad end, Peter and Mel are good friends these days.
In 2018, Mel was full of praise for him in an interview with The Guardian.
“He was my booty call – a fantastic lover. And he was so polite. He’d ask before he kissed me!” she cheekily revealed.
In 2019, she mentioned him again, stating: “He’s a very lovely guy. We came up in the pop industry in the 1990s at the same time.”
In 2022, Mel even rang Peter to check if he was Snapdragon on The Masked Singer Australia. “She decided to call me live from the show to ask if I was Snapdragon! I said: ‘I’m in England, and I’m in Grease in the West End, so it’s unlikely!’ I was then asked if I’m travelling between the UK and Oz to do both shows,” he said in his OK! column.
