It’s a new year in Weatherfield so it’s time to preview all the action for 2026 in Coronation Street. And it’s shaping up to be a very dramatic one!

There’s the aftermath of Corriedale to deal with including Billy’s tragic death, plus just when the audience will think the dust is settling after an explosive start to the year there’s even more drama.

A brief flashforward will reveal a shocking death has taken place on the cobbles.

But we won’t find out – yet – who’s dead!

It all sounds like a thrilling new year in Coronation Street, and we were delighted to get the chance to chat with Corrie producer Kate Brooks who gave us a sneak preview at what’s in store in Weatherfield in 2026.

Here’s a round-up of everything she told us.

Todd and Theo’s toxic relationship

With Theo having left Billy to die in the minibus, things look bleak for Todd. He was ready to leave Theo – with Billy’s help – but now everything has changed.

“He’s very wrapped up in his grief, post Billy’s death,” agrees Kate. “Todd’s all over the shop. He doesn’t feel like he’s got the strength to go through with leaving Theo. He’s feeling really worthless.”

And Todd’s increasing vulnerability means Theo’s grip gets even tighter.

“Theo is obviously ravaged by his own guilt,” Kate continues. “He did something absolutely despicable, but he justifies it as being absolutely necessary to keep hold of Todd. “We’ll see Theo become more manipulative, we’ll see him pull Todd back into his fold because Todd needs him. He needs that support.”

And this story isn’t over yet.

“This is not something that’s wrapped up after a couple of months,” Kate warns us. “This is ongoing. and we will continue to tell the story about this domestic abuse truthfully and realistically.”

But fortunately for our nerves, and for Todd, there is an end-point.

“Todd will start to realise that maybe all is not what it seems,” says Kate. “As will other people around Todd. They will realise that he’s not behaving how he should be behaving…”

Fingers crossed for a good resolution to this story!

Debbie’s torment

After the tragedy of Corriedale, manipulative Carl dragged his unconscious sister Debbie into the driver’s seat of the crashed car. So things are not looking good for Debbie as 2026 begins.

“She doesn’t know really what happened and she doesn’t know that Carl has interfered and swapped places with her. She really struggling with that and she’s wants to face the punishment,” says Kate.

Plus there’s all the other things that happened at the wedding – the secrets that were revealed, her whole family falling apart – and her dementia to cope with.

“Even though there’s drama aplenty, she’s still Debbie,” Kate reassures us. “Her heart’s still there.”

Bernie will be tested

Debbie’s pal Bernie’s also going to be having a tough time in 2026.

“She’s buried a lot of grief,” says Kate. “So we wanted to kind of explore what would happen if she had to deal with another death, another really tragic death, and how that grief manifests.”

Sounds interesting.

“It’s a big story for Bernie,” Kate agrees. “And Roy’s involved in that story as well.”

Megan gets even more manipulative

The uncomfortable storyline involving teacher Megan’s abuse of teenager Will will carry on into 2026. And we were shocked to hear it’s going to get even worse with young Sam becoming involved in the drama.

“Sam gets wind that’s something’s amiss, and we will see the lengths that Megan will go to to manipulate Sam and to keep him quiet,” Kate reveals. “It will be massively detrimental to Sam.”

But of course, Sam has Eve, Leanne and Toyah all fighting his corner.

“You’ve got these three very strong, very fiery women, sisters, whose boys have been manipulated by Megan,” says Kate. “This woman who they considered their friend…”

It doesn’t look good for Megan is all we’re saying!

Driscoll drama

And that’s not the only excitement for the Driscolls. The coming months will also reveal more secrets!

“There was this very small beat that some eagle eyed viewers might have spotted where we saw Maggie at number one, and she looked into the cabinet and her reaction suggested that she saw something that made her feel slightly on edge or uncomfortable,” Kate reminds us.

“We will reveal what that secret is in the coming months, but it is just the tip of the iceberg!”

Seeing the future

When it comes to stories told in a different way, Coronation Street has been more traditional than the other soaps, with a few exceptions like Todd and Theo’s Behind Closed Doors episode.

But this year, Coronation Street is going to treat us to a brief flash-forward to tease a huge storyline for the spring and summer.

“This is something that’s been in the making for a really long time and it gives us a destination for our current big stories to all come together and be involved in a much bigger storyline,” Kate explains.

So what happens? Well, someone dies!

“One of our characters has found a dead body on the street, and we don’t know who it is,” Kate teases. “So, there are five potential victims and we will take the audience on a journey for them to try and figure out who that body is and what happened.”

So it’s less of a whodunnit and more of a who was it done to!

“It will involve an awful lot of the community,” Kate continues. “I don’t think I’ve ever told a story that involves quite as many character groups. In other words, everyone’s affected by the story. And there are so many twists and so many turns.”

Viewers will only see a glimpse of what’s happened a few months ahead. Kate tells us the flashforward isn’t too far into the future.

“It’s a scene of a character being interviewed by the police. Therefore we understand what’s happened, we understand the context of what’s happened, but we don’t actually know who it’s happened to,” she adds.

We absolutely can’t wait to see it!
