It's fair to say that the Weatherfield police can't always be trusted

DI Costello showed a major sign of being corrupt in Coronation Street recently as he bribed Kit Green with a promotion, but he wouldn’t be the first police officer to bend the law.

The Weatherfield police force has showed many signs of corruption over the years, and it hasn’t always played by the books.

Here are the top moments Corrie police strayed away from the law.

1. Craig protected Faye Windass

In 2022, Craig Tinker found out that his girlfriend Faye had been involved in the death of an elderly man named Ted. Emma Brooker had been in the car with Faye when she’d knocked down Ted.

Ted later died of his injuries, with the women failing to hand themselves into the police.

Faye eventually confessed everything to Craig, and he agreed to forget about the whole thing.

However, the guilt ate away at home and he ended up stepping down from his role in the police force before going back to it later on.

2. Kit Green planted evidence

When Lauren Bolton disappeared, Sarah Platt had been planning on planting one of Lauren’s hairs in Nathan Curtis’ van so he’d get arrested for the crime.

Kit caught Sarah, but desperate to solve a case, he ended up planting the hair in the van himself.

3. Kit deleted information

When it was revealed that a red car had been involved in the disappearance of Joel Deering, Kit knew that things could be pinned on him. He’d had an encounter with Joel on the night he died.

To save his own skin, Kit deleted his car registration info from the system to avoid suspicion.

4. Becky Swain faked her own death

A more recent storyline of police corruption came when Becky Swain returned from the dead after almost four years.

She revealed that she was working undercover to bring down an OCG but had to fake her own death and move to Alicante to protect Lisa and Betsy Swain.

As part of this though, she’d actually stolen the identity of a homeless woman named Tia Wardley. She’d had Lisa and Betsy believe that she’d died instead.

5. DI Costello hired help to keep secrets hidden

DI Costello not only was involved in Becky’s whole fake death plot, but he’s also been sure to pull some strings to make things go his way and keep his secrets hidden.

From allowing Lisa to go back to work, to paying someone to pretend to be Tia Wardley, we reckon there’s more to his corruption.

Coronation Street corrupt police 6. Neil sexually assaulted Bethany

Neil Clifton was a police officer who was friends with Nathan Curtis.

He was part of the sex ring that groomed Bethany Platt, raping her during a party.

In 2017, Neil was found guilty and sent to prison for his crimes, last being seen on screen in 2018.
