Coronation Street in backlash over new format amid Carla and Lisa wedding praise

The episode was only half an hour

Carla and Lisa got married in last night’s episode of Coronation Street (Thursday, April 23), but fans wanted a longer episode for the occasion.

Back in January the soap changed to shorter, 30 minutes episode as opposed to the previous one hour format.

But, for special occasions like the Swarla wedding, fans think that half an hour just isn’t enough.

Carla and Lisa got wed in Coronation Street

Carla had fully planned to spend the day moping about at home, still gutted after being forced to call off her wedding when the hotel flooded.

But Lisa clearly had other ideas. Keeping her cards close to her chest, she spun a little story about Debbie offering a free day of champagne by way of an apology. Before Carla knew it, she was all glammed up and heading to the hotel – only to walk into a huge surprise, with everything beautifully set up for their wedding after all.

With the big day suddenly back on track, Carla and Lisa didn’t waste a second. They exchanged vows and officially tied the knot. They became wife and wife in a moment that was worth the wait.

And the surprises didn’t stop there. Lisa, with a helping hand from Sally, lured Carla back to the factory. Albeit, under the pretence of fixing the Underworld alarm. Instead, they were greeted by their nearest and dearest. They jumped out to celebrate with a full-on wedding reception.

There was a heartfelt speech from Roy and few dodgy dance moves thrown into the mix. And, then a trip out onto the balcony to enjoy a firework display – courtesy of David. To round off the whirlwind day, the newlyweds headed to Roy’s for a cosy wedding meal. Not a bad turnaround for a day that nearly never happened.

Coronation Street fans full of praise for Swarla wedding

Viewers were full of praise for the soap’s first successful sapphic wedding, taking to social media to share their joy.

One fan commented: “Wow what a really cute wedding. I’m so happy for Carla and Lisa.”

Another fan beamed: “Finally just watched the wedding and it was the most beautiful wedding ever!!,” while a third person agreed: “Last night’s Corrie reminded me of the great community spirit in the show….. The wedding was really uplifting, and Swarla finally tied the knot. Momentarily dispensing from the Theo story…”

However, not everyone was impressed. They felt as though the episode was ‘choppy’ and ‘rushed’ due to the shorter episode format. A big wedding episode like this should’ve been given longer to shine.

New half an hour episode format falls flat

One fan on Reddit commented: “I think tonight’s episode was a fine example of how the 30 minute episodes just don’t work for certain storylines.

“Tonight was so choppy! One minute Carla and Lisa were up on the balcony watching the fireworks with all their friends downstairs and then the very next second they were just sat in an empty factory, it was bizarre!

“I do really miss the hour long episodes, I wish they’d bring them back for special episodes.”

Another person added: “I think overall probably the 30 minute format works better for normal episodes and the hour for more ‘explosive’/special ones but I guess they can’t switch between formats like that and are tethered to their ITV slots mostly. Although I’m sure we’ll get hour ones again occasionally.”

A third person also contributed: “I think event type episodes like this, they should be an hour long.

“When it’s content heavy, between the wedding and cramming in bits and pieces in the build up to the murder, it makes the scenes feel too quick and rushed when it’s only a half hour episode.

“Big occasions or moments should be an hour long event, and keep the standard episodes half an hour if they insist.”
